Hi everyone,
Just wanted to ask everyone's opinion on these two floorstanding speakers. I can get a pair of the bics for $480 and the yamahas I can only find cheapest on Amazon for $343 each. So with all that said just wanted to know everyone's opinion with the price and performance range. Also if anyone has compared these in person and which one they'd prefer that way.

Thanks everyone for your help and comments,
Jason R.

Is that about your budget range? Neither of those would be on my list of recommendations off the top of my head, especially in that price range.

Give this a read Pioneer SP-PK52FS 5.1 Floorstanding Speaker System Review | Audioholics and then give the towers a listen at your local Best Buy. Unfortunately, you just missed the sale price of ~$250/pr, but no doubt they will be on sale right around Black Friday for a great price and well below what you're looking to spend for a very decent speaker.

In that price range, I'd strongly consider these: EMP Tek Tower Speaker

Yes, that's about the max range I'd like to go. Id like to ask why'd you recommend those tower speakers if you don't mind? I looked at the specs of those and compared it to the two I'm looking at and it seems the yamaha and BIC have more of a frequency range and are more sensitive. Are you going by just the fact that the speakers you recommended sound better than the two I listed?

Thanks for the advice,
Jason R.

The Yamaha NS-777 has the widest frequency response range of all the floor standing speakers that we have reviewed. It sacrifices some on the low end of the spectrum but has an impressively high top end. This is primarily due to the variety of drivers and their quality. One of the drawbacks to these speakers is their size and weight, but for the average user of tower speakers, that is only a minor inconvenience. That aside, though, this is an excellent set of speakers.

One of the most appealing aspects of the BIC Acoustech PL-89 floor standing speaker is the incredible range of frequencies that it is capable of reproducing. The manufacture has engineered them to clearly output audio as low as 25 Hz and as high as 23 kHz. This is by far the broadest range we ran into on similar systems, and it therefore makes these speakers our number two choice for people who don't want to add a sub woofer to their audio systems. People who don't want a dedicated sub woofer are few and far between, but regardless, the range is impressive.
So you work for top ten reviews?

So has anyone actually heard in person the yamaha or bics I mentioned? If so which one do you prefer?

Thanks again for everyone's advice and comments,
Jason R.

Did you read the review I linked of the Pioneers? That's one reason why I recommended them. I've also heard the 52s and own the bookshelf models. On a budget, they offer an excellent value for the performance they provide.

The EMPs are also well reviewed and liked around here as a value speaker that you'll get a lot for your money with. Again, an AH review:

For me, I would also pass - also do not put a lot of weight into marketing specs

A good price on towers - Focal, and new in the box
FOCAL Chorus 717V (716V) Dual 6-1/2" Tower Speaker PAIR Havana | Accessories4less

If you want to spend less, Then HTD Level Two

Also, the Pioneer Towers are nice.

And, look at the EMP

I have read the reviews as well as viewed the links given. I think the focals are a little out of my price range, and the pioneer setup, i was really looking just for 2 towers as that review says its for a 5.1. I appreciate everyone's advice as i like to hear what your thoughts are on this. So, sounds like everyone is saying nay to both speakers that i had referred to. For the bics price i could get a pair for $479, if you don't recommend those speakers, is there any that are better performance at that price that you've heard? Or has no one really heard the speakers to be able to compare to. The reason I was particular about these two brands was because i got special pricing for the bics, and my current setup i have a yamaha center, but i can still return it and go with a bic setup. But if there's something a lot better performance around that price i'm all ears.

Thanks again everyone for your comments and advice,
Jason R.

Right now I have a 5.1 system. I was going to choose between yamaha ns 777 (because I currently have a yamaha center) except they are $343 each which is a little high for me. But then I got a deal for a pair of brand new BIC pl 89 for $479 and I can return my center for a BIC if I do that. Also I was asking everyone's opinion on this or if there's a better pair of floorstanders that they heard in this price range. But if you haven't heard the bics or yamahas I don't know how you can compare them against each other or against any other set of speakers.

Thanks for your help with this,
Jason R.

Thank you zieglj01 for your advice! Id like to also ask if you know any other floorstanders around that price of better quality that you've heard. And if there is does it have a center channel with matched drivers so I could replace the yamaha center I currently have.

Thanks for the help,
Jason R.

The review is of the package...you can buy all of the speakers separately. It doesn't take much sense to figure that out.

You'd basically just have gotten lucky if someone had heard the exact speakers you are asking about. Have YOU heard both of these speakers yourself? Since no matter what our opinions of them or other speakers are, you may decide you like one or the other or possibly even don't like either of them. The real answer, if you already intend for it to be one of those speakers, is to buy both and send back the one you don't like.

Well I don't have extra money to buy both sets in the first place, or I would have done that. I have enough for either or just not both, and I'm sure someone out there has heard them. I was just asking for advice on them or any other set of floorstanders at that price range are great performance. Preferably one with matching surrounds and center so I have matching drivers. Where I live there's really no one that has out speakers on display or anyone offering to do demos.

Thanks again for the advice,
Jason R.

Jason You need to get the Pioneers Andrew Jones 22's & 52's speakers, except the sub. They are excellent for the price and for the SQ it gives you Like J_Garcia has stated earlier. Nobody here will stare you wrong with the suggestions. There are not too many Yamaha speaker owners here, so if you really want them I'd suggest a Yamaha speaker forum.
