Basic Speaker Tuning Help

I'm trying to tune my speakers and I need some basic information to continue. I'm trying to bring out more of a mid-range sound. I'm in the process of selecting a subwoofer and hope to have that in place within the next week or so. I know the sub will probably change how the mains are tuned but I want to start experimenting now.

My system:
Receiver = Yamaha RX-V3800
Center = Definitive Technology CS-8060 HD
Fronts = Definitive Technology BP7000s
Surround = Definitive Technology Pro Monitor 1000s

When I get in to the interface I can adjust the following parameters but I don't really understand them. I'm looking for basic information and suggestions although I would also appreciate links to good detailed information as well.

1.Frequency
2.Gain
3.Q

Thanks!

Did you try running the Auto-EQ (YPAO) already? What exactly is the issue?

Yes. Several times. I guess I don't really have an issue per say. I want to learn how these settings affect the sound. Having spoken with the techs at Def Tech (good guys there) and they said that YPAO is not that accurate with bi-polar speakers. Either way I would like to experiment a little. I can always set it to default and start over.

I've heard a few say YPAO is not accurate period :)

Frequency is going to be the range that you want to affect and is the main adjustment for the various bands. When you enter this for each speaker, there will be a selection of those bands available to be adjusted. You will have to do this for each speaker individually...
Gain = volume
Q is a bit more complicated but effectively in this case I believe will refer to how narrow or wide the chosen band is affected.

A subwoofer and a woofer are two different creatures. The subwoofer should only contribute from 80, maybe 100hz or below, well below the midrange. Where you should be concerned is with the woofer (or woofer/midrange speaker in two way speakers) in your main speakers.
