Hi Everyone,

My name is Gary, I'm new here so please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong board.

I bought a Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray Player a few years back and at the time loved it. In 2011 I began having health issues that had me making visit after visit to the hospital, yadda, yadda, yadda. Fast forward, after not using it for over two years I decided the other day to get some new movies to watch, (Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters, Finding Nemo and Epic).

I couldn't get them to play so I returned them for a different copy. After the store associate exchanged them he informed me to upgrade my player, so I connected a network cable and upgraded the unit. Checking it, the player read that the update is current.

So I try both movies and guess what? You got it, they still don't play. I'm getting messages like "Unknown" and "Can't Read Disc". I tried an older movie (Underworld) and it worked.

So why aren't the new movies being recognised/read by the player? Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

Gary

Welcome to the forum, Gary!

All three movies that you mentioned are available on 3D blu-ray discs. Do you know if you happened to get the 3D versions? The S550 can't play 3D discs.

I double checked all three and couldn't see the 3D symbol anywhere.

The other issue is that the older the BD player, the less likely it is to play some of the newer BD's. If none of them are 3D, the issue could be the age of the BD player. It really depends on how old the thing is. The good news is that you can get a great BD player for relatively cheap if you find you need to upgrade.

Oh my God! It was the simplest thing. I reformatted the memory stick that was plugged into the back and I was back in business. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for posting your solution! That sure wouldn't have occurred to me, but I'll keep it in my mind if this comes up again.

I remember on my previous Panasonic blu-ray player that I'd have an issue with some discs if I didn't have a memory card in the slot because they needed the memory (for BD-Live, I think). I honestly can't remember if they wouldn't play or just took a lot longer to load. I just learned to leave the card in there. :)

I think as long as you plug an USB 2.0 in it should be fine, but make sure it has nothing in it. If in doubt try plugging in a new one, 1 or 2GB would be good. If it has to be an old one then delete everything in it first, if still does not work then yes try reformatting it (FAT32 only) using your PC may help.
