....will we see a big spike in activity on these forums today, by government employees with nothing better to do?

For the life of me, I don't know why the first "non-essential" positions to get cut weren't in Congress and the White House. I bet that they'd be a lot more motivated to reach an agreement if it were their own jobs on the line.

"But, you can't just furlough Congress and the President."

Fine. Furlough their aids and furlough his protection detail. Guess who'd be at the bargaining table then. Well, or on here. :D

My dad is annoyed since he's now furloughed (civil service employee and retired air force). I'm sure my two enlisted brother in laws are annoyed as well, although they will get paid retroactively and USAA is offering interest free loans to service members who aren't getting paid.

I work for L-3 communications for a DOJ contract, and I think most of the DOJ people here in the facility are furloughed. Our contract is funded through the end of the calendar year so we'll all still be working every day. I'm always on the forums anyway so there won't be any increase in activity from me :)

I went to the NOAA site to check the weather and got a status alert page that they weren't available because of the shutdown. That is an inconvenience but weatherbug on my phone will suffice.

I sure hope things get sorted by the end of the year or we will be in a sorry state.

Does that mean there are no police? Maybe I'll see about robbing a bank. :D

You're city and state police are saying "Go ahead - let's see how you make out". :D
There's more of us than them. We have so few police right now that they literally only respond to something in progress or involving injuries or imminent danger.

My G/F volunteers at the local nature center in town and she was told they can't even come in to volunteer because the park is shut down.

I was turned away at the trailhead by a park ranger saying I couldn't mountain bike as the park was closed.

I asked him if he was getting paid and he said "nope".

I said "what's the chance of you chasing me if I hop the fence right over there and just go ride?"

He said "zero"

I had one heck of a ride....

Have no fear, gents. The House is still drawing their paychecks. Now, there's rumors someare refusingto accept them, but we all know how trustworthy they are.

I love that these jackasses can cause a situation where the people they represent aren't allowed to work yet they still get paid. Must be nice.

Darien, think. Why would they be making these laws be if those that made the laws had to live by them like everyone else??

I haven't followed much of the news, but I heard about this yesterday. The fact that someone in government decided to spend all the time and money to print up signs and barricade the monument in the first place angers me, but what people did in the moment is uplifting. It's easy to generalize that people just don't care or have common sense/decency anymore because of how the news reports a lot of things, but I think in reality that most folks still do.

'Greatest generation' veterans sweep past barricades at memorial in their honor.

The problem is that those "most folks" aren't represented by their elected representitives. Their representitives are generally controlled by lobbyists.

and yet, we keep on re-electing them.

A local DJ said that no matter what party they belong to at the next election he's voting for people that were not already in office. On the surface seems pretty silly, but maybe not so much.

Anyone else wondering?

A few weeks ago the white house had enough money to bomb Syria.
But now we can't afford to let WW-II Veterans into an open air memorial?
