I'm hosting a small listening event at my place this weekend with about 8-9 guests for a little fun comparison of Vinyl for CD on my reference system. I've got copies of several albums on Vinyl and CD as well as 24 Bit Flac files.

We will be listening to:
  • Phil Collins: Hello I Must Be Going
  • Michael Jackson: Thriller
  • Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
  • Spyro Gyra: Breakout
  • and a few other surprises

Even MajorLoser will be present to share his wisdom and audiophile preferences ;)

Should be a fun time that will likely generate an article as a result. I wonder how much wine or beer it will take until sonic differences become indistinguishable? :D

Check out the test form attached.

Too bad I don't live closer. I don't care much about vinyl, but I would like to hear those speakers. I'd feign interest. :)

So, you're evaluating the tapes the vinyl and CD were made from, and the work of the mastering engineers, both of them, (meeting the demands of a producer) for each format, right? That's comparing two entirely different signal chains, each with entirely different human input, right? Good. Just so everyone knows this isn't a comparison of the vinyl and CD mediums....

The RCA Living Stereo series are probably good for that purpose. Would be nice if Gene include some classical symphony orchestral music titles.

"Play some Skynyrd, man". :D:cool::D

Seriously though, if you can mange to hear some Pink Floyd (in particular Wish You Were Here), The Doors, Getz/Gilberto, I would be interested in the report-out.

No it's just a fun get together among friends to explore music on various formats and turn into a little article for an entertaining read. It's not a DBT either  But thanks for raining on the party. :(

On somewhat related topic - we just just switched our office phone system and phones to fully modern SIP system with "HD Voice" aka G.722 16Khz 64kbis codec.
It's so much clear than previous avaya system and yet, the complete silence (then both sides not talking) due to near perfect filtering background noises system makes results in very unusual acoustic experience.
Simply many refer it as freaky...

Just since probably fully digital did improve the sound clarity so significantly it doesn't matter that everyone likes it (but honestly, too bad for them since this system is significant cost savings :) )

Sounds like a good time Gene. Wish I could be down there. Would love to hear those beasts. Do you still have the Pass Labs amps?

Sounds like some serious fun Gene. I hope you and your guests have a hoot doing this. I would like to recommend Dire Strait's Lover Over Gold album on vinyl. Some very serious transients and dynamics hidden on the surface of that record. Enjoy!!! :)

Thx it should be. I have Dire Straits Brothers in Arms on CD and SACD 5.1 but not on vinyl. Incredible recordings.
