I want to know why protons stay together in the nucleus. They carry a positive charge and repel each other.

Think of an atom like a society. Positive people like to hang out together, and they cluster around each other. You've got a bunch of other folks who are fairly neutral that also hang out in the same place, but they don't necessary care that much about the positive message...they're just there doing there thing. That's the bulk of the society. And then you have the negative people - always hovering around the fringes trying to start some s**t. You never quite know where the negative people are going to pop up, but you know that there's a real good probability that they'll be in certain places.

Well, either that or it's some scientific reason like the Strong Nuclear Force. Yeah, right...that just sounds silly.

They've know about this for a long time. Why did my physics teacher not mention these? I still don't quite get 'how' these keep protons together but maybe I'll figure that out after dropping acid.
