Finally, a NA turntable assembed in Boston for under $200 which blow away anything offered by Denon or Sony usually found at Best Buy or Future Shop

U-Turn Audio

there $179.00 model

there $279.00 model

That does look pretty nice, esp for the price.

Any idea what is different b/w the basic and plus models (is it just a better cart)?

I like how they tucked in the RCA outs.

The basic uses an MDF platter and I believe on the more expensive model that you get an acrylic platter and a better cartridge.

Ordered this picture disc LP. IMO one of the best underrated Rock/Country/Jazz female vocalist to live.

I would choose the more expensive one out of these two as the cheaper model uses an mdf platter. When Rega released their entry table, the P1 for $499, it came shipped with a horrid mdf platter that was out of round. I'm not saying that this will be the case for this manufacturer but I would definately look into this before purchasing the cheaper unit (if budget doesn't allow for the costlier alternative) .

I found a used copy of The Decline of Western Civilization on vinyl.

Never seen this before and the price was decent, so I felt pretty much obligated to grab it.

Supermarket chain Whole Foods starts selling vinyl LPs by The Rolling Stones and Daft Punk

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Arcade Fire LPs are also sharing shelf space with the chain's organic food and drinks products

Upmarket supermarket chain Whole Foods Market has started selling vinyl LPs alongside its organic food and drink products.

Five of the chain's branches, all located in California, introduced a "carefully curated selection of vinyl records" earlier this month (August). At present, the stores are stocking an eclectic range of albums by artists including The Rolling Stones, Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, Tegan and Sara, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Emeli Sandé, Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra.

"This launch isn't just about stocking our shelves with something new and different – it's about listening to our shoppers and giving them access to the things they want – whether it's their favourite cheese or their favourite way to enjoy music," the company's regional executive co-ordinator Mike Bowen said in a press statement.

Whole Foods Market, which was founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas, now has over 350 branches included seven UK outlets located in Glasgow, Cheltenham and London's Camden, Kensington High Street, Piccadilly Circus, Clapham Junction and Stoke Newington.

In April, it was announced that UK vinyl sales saw a 78 per cent increase in the first quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, a vinyl-only public library has recently opened in London's Stoke Newington.

As an Ancient with 2000 + albums before CD’s came along, I can’t say I’m completely surprised that vinyl has made a come-back.

The human ear loves analog and nothing and I mean nothing will ever replace the album artwork & liner notes of yore. At least twice a year I’ll turn on my Onkyo CP-1055F II turntable and the memories come flooding back; some good (Little Feat’s Goodbye Columbus) and some not so good (Led Zeppelin’s first 2 albums production are horrid, like ¾’s of the production work out of England from the late 40’s to the mid-90’s; hence all the re-mastered albums/CD’s from those years). The biggest problem I always had as an avid music collector was the uneven qualities of pressings and the inevitable degradation of an LP for various reasons; time, the effects of alcohol & stimulants to those poor cartridges during a party, the heat/cold for storage and let’s not forget the ham handed handling by friends & family. Early on in my hobby … all of 14 years old … I got into the habit of recording/transferring an album to cassette to preserve the integrity of the source. So I had this love/hate relationship with albums from the beginning. Even with the barely audible analog hum in the background on my pristine albums couldn’t distract me from the fun my ears were having but I also knew that the more I played the album, the worst the signal would become. While it was ok to have a clean copy on cassette; I went out and got an audiophile grade Nakamichi in my early 20’s and another one in my late 30’s, my ears were not deceived. So CD’s were highly anticipated in the collector ranks. Imagine the shock and disappointment on purchasing the whole Beatles catalogue from the Parlaphone catalogue, as my first purchase. They may have been clear as a bell but my ears recoiled in shock. So I continued to copy onto cassette because it actually got rid of some of the shrillness of the early CD’s that came out. With time things got better but the love affair with collecting left me a bit jaded. I have about 5000 + cd’s but once Napster came on the scene … I logged in 3 weeks after it came on-line … I’ve never gone back to either cd’s or albums for various reasons. The biggest plus for me as a collector is storage; 2TB + of MP3/Flac files … I stopped counting how many recordings I have … and ease of access. The quality early on was terrible but they are rapidly becoming better & better. I’ve probably replaced 80% of my original 128kbps MP3’s with 320kbps files or in Flac format with better compression and I’m happy as a clam overall.

Someone mentioned Queen’s first album and was wondering about the quality. I have one of the first exclusive 500 pressings [Elektra #75064] released in the US (the Queen logo on the cover was in gold leaf) and the audio quality was shite. But like a lot of recordings from that era you overlooked it because the music was so dam good.

Will vinyl make a come-back to its golden era from the late 50’s to the early 80’s? No. There is no doubt there’s an enhanced niche market currently but until someone figures out how to make them sound as pristine as the day you bought them and portably take a sizable amount of them to wherever you might be; it ain’t gonna happen. BTW according to Time magazine (8/12/13) cassettes are also making a come-back.

As the famous black philosopher once stated in a film, “Negro, please!!!”

I bet they sound great on your system. I was able to save most of my Elvis Vinyl's from the Sandy storm. The covers didn't fare well though. That 30 CD collection must have been alot of money.

I'm really thinking of getting the Uturntable as a backup for my Sota Sapphire 111 just to compare the SQ. Do you think the acrylic platter is worth the $100 over the MDF? I tried contacting them but their email isn't working, I was wondering if they sold either model w/o cartridge.
Cheers Jeff

I just don't think I would do an MDF platter. It might not even be really based on facts, but just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

I have heard of MDF plats warping, probably contained to a particular brand etc.

But personally, I just don't think I would do it.
