I have the OPPO 103 model blu-ray player connected to my Yamaha receiver via HDMI. DVD's play just fine but when i play a blu-ray disc i get no sound. The receiver supports all the HD audio formats so i have to think the settings are not right somewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. Try this: Go into the Setup Menu > Audio Format Setup, and set "HDMI Audio" to "Bitstream." Also, set "Secondary Audio" to "Off."

I did what you told me to do and still no sound.
Make sure your firmware is updated. I have automatic updates set on my Oppo player. DRM for BD is touchy, and have have had to do hasty updates on occasions when all are assembled to watch a movie.

I just noticed that on the receiver screen it says decoder off. It should not be saying should it?

No it should not. It probable means the receiver is not receiving the audio stream.

Install your updates. Since DVDs play, I suspect you have correct connections and settings.

If you still don't have audio after installing the updates, the see if you can borrow another BD player and confirm that that works. If it does you need to have a conversation with OPPO.

I updated the blu-ray player yesterday before i went to bed. Then i did what i should have done in the first place. I unplugged the HDMI cable from the BD player to the receiver then plugged it back in. I got sound now. I over analyzed the situation looking for problems that didn't exist. LOL

You are right about what you say. At long range we can't see your system.

However it highlights what a lousy connector the HDMI connector is. It should have had a locking mechanism from the start. Another example of modern engineers requiring a few smart cuffs to the back of the neck.

Glad you now have audio.

Jammers - glad that you got it fixed. Always nice to have things working the way that you expect them to.

Sometimes it's the opposite - that it just wasn't pushed in far enough to begin with. I had that happen to me once. I've never had one come loose...ever. HDMI is just fine in my book. :)

That may be true but i'd rather deal with a HDMI connector then have to use two or three other cables to do the same job. HDMi is a godsend in some ways.

I agree about the one connection. However the connector should have been designed to click in securely.

I have to say when watching a BD disc it's hard to go back to just regular DVD. I have the combo pack of the Avengers and wanted to see the difference between DVD and BD. Man after seeing the clarity of HD the DVD version looked grainy and drab.

I agree, video and audio of BD is much superior to DVD.
