My grandfather passed away about 10 years ago. Since then his turn table has sat on a shelf. Its an onkyo cp1200A. I have not owned a TT in years so I decided to see if it was something I enjoyed or not. I dusted this old tt off and plugged it in to see if it would work. It was making a funny clicking sound but the platter wasn't moving. I assumed it was the belt. Pulled the platter and sure enough. Totally disintegrated. So my receiver does not have a phonostage so I will have to buy one.

Question is

A is this a decent enough table to fix. And

B if so how big is the belt?

This is the belt you need.

As to whether it is any good, I can't tell you for certain. Onkyo were not particularly known for turntables. I could not find a picture of yours in the Vinyl Engine Gallery, however I could download the service manual and look at the engineering drawings.

It looks pretty typical of Far Eastern semi automatic turntables with auto return. This latter mechanism looked nastier than most. However it is my policy when confronted with these turntables to remove the auto return mechanism. That mechanism is far too much garbage for the stylus to drag around. Removal improves them enormously. The arm design looks to be at least average and likely better.

The cartridges that came with those turntables were usually in the dreadful category and LP destroyers. So it is a given you fit a modern cartridge. You will need to download an alignment protractor from vinyl engine.

I see no reason that with belt replacement, removing the auto return mechanism and fitting a new cartridge, like an Ortofon 2M Red you should not have a very respectable turntable.

Looks like mine has an ortofon cartridge. I measured around the platter and the motor pulley with a string it came out to just over 26". I have found a few references to the 25" Pulley on various sights. As I understand there needs to be some tension. Does that seem right to u

It is important to get the correct belt. I referenced a hyperlink where you can buy the correct belt for $17.

Are you familiar with a company called turntableneedles.com. They have one listed for the cp1200a for $14 shipped. Vs 23 at your link. They had a product finder and listed a specific belt for the cp1200a. Thoughts?

Just curious - what's the difference between the one that Mark linked to versus this one on the turntableneedles website? As the OP stated, it comes up in their product listings for the Onkyo CP-1200A.

I don't think it matters where you order the belt from as long is it the correct one.

The issue is you could have researched this before posting. I found you a belt in less than 10 minutes. Its not my money, so I did not look for the cheapest. I think you should get my point, that this site really can't be assumed to be a free concierge service. We do help and are glad to, but have to set obvious limits and trust people can be at least minimally resourceful.

As far as the cartridge, I have already suggested the Ortofon 2M red. I regard this cartridge as offering the best performance per dollar for turntables such as yours.

I leave you to find the best deal on it.

Wow buddy. You really need to relax a bit. Keep in mind I am new to vinyl. I don't know which resources are trust worthy or otherwise. I found a service manual. Read up on this model but could not find the specific dimensions for certain so I asked for help. If that upsets you. It would be preferable for you not to respond to the post as opposed to insulting new members to this forum. As opposed to continuing a ridiculous debate I will not be posting on this site, at the very least to you. Any longer. I will go to one of the many other forums where people are not being arrogant and hostile.

I have the same TT which I just acquired for almost nothing (part of a 4-pc purchase: Onkyo Amp/Receiver, Onkyo Dual cassette player, Sony multi 5-CD player, and Onkyo TT for a total of $25). The belt was completely gone - with much of it melted onto the platter. I was able to easily remove the old belt with a straightedge and wiped it clean with hydrogen peroxide, and replaced with a new, $8 replacement belt purchased on eBay.

After replacing the belt, the unit works properly.

An $8 repair is totally worthwhile. This deck has cueing (up down) and automatic return. It's not high end, but it does the trick.
