Hi all, I'm renovating my house and planning to install in-wall speakers. I'd like to do a 5.1 system. I've been doing some searching but haven't seen any clear answers on the question below.

Are there any good subs that go in the wall? Or should I just have a stand alone sub?

It will be in the living room, mostly for movies.

I think the big question to answer is what do you want? There are not many "off the shelf" in-wall subwoofers that will impress. There are probably only a handful or less. The JL audio option is rather good but expensive. DIY is another route which I have done multiple times with great success. However, not everyone is capable of a DIY option. Velodyne also has some reasonably good sub options as does Artison.

It's all about size/ volume for subs. In-wall subs just don't have the physical size for great performance. So dual standalone subs will be better.

I am using four Velodyne SC600 in-floor subs in my living room because they are only 9" deep and I can easily hide them behind my 73" TV. :D

They can definitely shake the walls like a rag doll. But in terms of accuracy and output, they will not compare to bigger subs.

I don't know but the Radia BGX-S12B's in our HT room ( of course the room is really treated and built as a HT room ) does a pretty good job of performing as compared to my dual Rythmiks,D15SE that are at the other house, the Radia's really hold their own, maybe it's the room 16.5x12.5x8.5)

We use both 2 10" inwall and 1 12" floor and it's great. Might even throw in an EMB series 2 in the mix. If three is great 4 would have to be outstanding...

PS: all the Radia's are in-wall

I don't know what your budget is but Atlantic Technology sells 2 in wall subs and one of them is THX certified. They are the IWTS-28 SUB/SA 180 Monoblock amplifier and the IWTS 8e Sub (THX). If this is out of your price range I really like Sonance products. They specialize in in-wall speakers and subs and have been doing it for years. There are some reasonable price ones also. The other companies that are mentioned are good also. It comes down to personal preference and budget of course. From your question, it appears you want a hidden surround sound so I would hide the sub also to match (again personal preference). But it would be cool for my friends to tell me that bass is awesome but where is your sub? Smile and point to the wall.
