How should I complement my 2.0 system?

Completely new to subwoofers here, I'm looking to add a sub to my pair of Beolab 3s. While they sound decent (very good for the little amount of money I paid), they lack in bass, and I will be moving to a larger apartment, which only amplify the problem. I listen to Jazz and Electronic music, so I'm looking for a good balance between tightness/accuracy and earthshaking rumbles, and I'm willing to pay up to the $900/1000 mark. Any suggestions?

Tell it it dresses nicely and has good posture.

Seroiusly, there is an abunence of very god subs in that price range by several sub-specific maufacturers. Hsu, SVS, Velodyne among others come to mind. All are good, but some have preferences. I'm sure they will come along shortly but if you stick to the brands recommended you will see recommened, you won't go wrong.

I think any of the below would be a pretty good option. Like Mark said there are a ton of options out there in that price range that are excellent. My own personal preference wouldn't be towards velodyne. I just think their quality has fallen a step behind the competition for the money. Not that aren't great, but I think the other companies offer just as much for less money.

This Dayton dual 12" kit would be my choice at $1k. It's a kit but a very easy one, all you do is glue the polyfill in, screw in the amp and then connect it to the drivers and screw them in. Shouldn't take more than an hour at most. The drivers in this kit are these, they look very good, and the amp is quality, and the cabinet is rock solid. I think that kit could give you a lot of very high quality output.

It depends upon your listening area. If average in size I think fuzz's recommendation of dual SB-1000 -SVS is a
good one. (Around $500 ea). Two subs IMO really help with smoothing out the bass. Plus SVS's 5 yr bumper to bumper guarantee
and their "45 day love it or send it back at their expense , no questions asked" is a pretty nice deal.

+2 on the SVS SB-1000. 1K delivered, great performance, compact, warranty, customer service, etc.
What are you powering your 2.0 with?
room size?
Cheers, Mac

Beolab 3's are active speakers, so I have a DAC (HDP from nuForce) that feeds RCA out. I'm thinking about getting an RCA Y-splitter so I can feed signal directly from DAC to sub and speakers. The room I would have my speakers in is about 200 sq. ft. (~33 sq. m.), which isn't a super large space, but bigger than what I had before.

The SB1000 has a high pass filter on it's RCA output, so that makes it really convenient for you to keep bass out of the speaker. My previous recommendation of the Dayton dual driver kit is waaay overkill for those speakers anyway, now that I have looked them up.

I personally think that a pair of the SB1000's is overkill for a room that size. Is it closed on all sides or open to the rest of your home?

If you can squeeze a little more out of your budget for $1124 shipped I would get a ULS15 one of the most musical subs I have ever heard, and on sale rite now, normally $1374.... I don't think I have ever heard such a tight fast sub capable of such HUGE output.... Subs are tough {for me} when it comes to music, I have heard great subs FOR MOViES, but put them in a music system with a pair of bookshelfs and they are useless.... The uls15 is what I would be using...

It has an opening to a hallway/pantry area. From the reviews I read, it seems like the SB1000s are if anything lacking in power, so I was thinking that they would be adequate for my small room. Have you tried them? What sub would you recommend to me?

From what I read, your room is anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 cubic feet. A single SB-1000 will easily take care of that room IMO.

That would depend on the desired SPL. A single SB1000 isn't going to get very loud, but then his speakers probably can't get very loud either.

I think that is an excellent recommendation. I believe Shady has a dual drive setup of the ULS15's (could be wrong about that).

Compact, sealed 15" sub, and great for music.

That is an awesome sub.....you will be upgrading your fronts soon(or wanting to). That ULS will destroy the output levels from your current system. Just don't spend all your money on a sub and then be frustrated that you can not push it hard because the front speakers are not capable of keeping up. Just my 2 cents.:)

That's what the PB-1000 for the same price is for :D
