Hi I'm new to this site. I would like some help on what receiver to get for the Polk monitor 70 speakers I just got. Would the Sony STR-DH540 be good or the Sony STR-DH740 be better to bi amp? Would a whole new receiver be the way to go apart from Sony. Greatly appreciate any advice.

Fronts are Polk monitor 70
Center is CS10 BLACK TSi Center Channel Speaker Polk
Rear is TSi100 Black Bookshelf Polk
Sub is Dayton Audio SUB-1200 12"

I would choose the 740. 7.2 capable, 3D pass through where the 540 is only 5.2 and no 3D passthrough. Power wise I imagine they are close to the same, Amazon did not specify in the quick search I made. Compare them, see which one suits your needs today and in the future. Doubt either have pre-amp outputs which means if you decide to add an external amp in the future that would not be an option with those models.

Of those choices I would go with the 740 aswell. I would suggest a avr with pre outs for future-proofing. Other then that, just get an avr that has the 'gadgets' you like. Most are comparable for sound reproduction. Bi amping < better seperate amp.

Thanks guys for your input. What would be a good pre out amp to get instead of the Sony? I kinda feel the Sony won't have a juice to give the Polk's.

Thanks. What would be a good pre out avr for these speakers?

Pre-outs bypass the internal amp of the receiver allowing you to use an external amp to drive speakers. Receivers are notoriously over rated when it comes to output power. Typically a 100 watt receiver driving 5 speakers actually feeds the speakers 50 watts each or even less. They are rated driving a sine wave at a specific frequency through one channel for the highest rating. You do not have to purchase a receiver, you can purchase a pre-pro and separate amp. Emotiva will sell you a UMC-200 and a UPA-500 for about $950 but you would also need RCA's to connect them. Yes this is more than a receiver however their amp is rated at 80 watts x five all channels driven. If a receiver is what you are looking for, and you want the option to later add more amplification, then look at receivers that have the pre-amp output feature. All of the big Japanese companies have models with and without them. Sony, Denon, Yamaha, just to name a few.

Ok I feel pre out avr is the way to go for these speakers. So would Yamaha RX-V473 5.1 and PYLE PT8000CH amp be a good start? If I am understanding how this works...

Ok I love that receiver DENON AVR-3312CI ! Thanks for getting me to it. Placed the order already! I am going to see how that sounds then go from there! Good news wife dad he is getting a new amp. If I am not happy with the way the Denon receiver sounds he will sell me his old Onkyo PA-MC5500 THX Ultra2 9-Channel Power Amplifier for 300 bucks. I think I am on the right path now, I hope.

Receivers are notoriously over rated...
People read this type of post and automatically presume they need an external amp. In most cases you don't, yet there will always be those who insist you spend an extra $1k for 80w. While I think it's fine to buy for the future and up your specs to a receiver with preamp outputs, wait and see what happens in your space before wasting a lot of money. Monitor 70 are easy to drive, you don't need a separate amp.

If I am not happy with the way the Denon receiver sounds
If you're not happy with the way the receiver sounds, look into room correction, speaker placement, even different speakers. The amp will have no effect.

The Denon is a great choice. I was not attempting to steer you in any direction, only providing options. When you listen to the Denon I'm sure you will be happy with the purchase.
