Hello everyone, I have a small setup consisting of my dads old pair of Advent Heritage towers that I refoamed powered by a Onkyo R-805x. I like to think it sounds pretty good ^_^ However, a few weeks ago the Onkyo decided to make a blue flash of light and a *BZZZT* and now will not turn on. I am now left with the question of "what to do". I'v been driving all around town (Dallas) looking for other 2.0/2.1 receivers and am having a very difficult time finding any.

So now Im here looking for others opinions/suggestions. Do yall think it would be worth it to see if i can have my fried onkyo fixed? (if its possible) or should I look into a new onkyo

Onkyo TX-8255

or any other recommendations?

I do like to consider myself an audiophile because there is nothing better to me in life than sound quality but I am new to the home theater/stereo world.

Also, I am a college student so funds are pretty limited.:(

Wow, that opens up all kinds of opportunities for jokes about seeing the light or going to the light...

It won't hurt to find a repair shop and see what it would cost to have them look at it for possible repair. I said look at it, not have them repair it. It may not be cost effective to have it repaired. So many electronics today are just not cost effective to repair.

If you are driving all over Dallas, you are spending a lot of money on gas. I'd search online first before spending valuable gas money. The market for receivers is firmly in the home theater camp right now which means 2.0 / 2.1 systems will be rare. Most are 5.1 systems as people multi-purpose them for music and movies.

Now a google search turned up some interesting possible remedies for your dead unit if you or someone you know is ok with electrical boards. Link 1 here. Now link 2 here if it's power supply.

If you know someone good with electronics and diagnosing problems, have them open it up and see if the power supply is dead or capacitors. Since it is electrical and electricity can bite, only open it up if you are comfortable doing so.

I'm not sure what you are doing, but there are plenty of 2.0 mini systems out there for like a small office, etc. Go to Onkyo's website and see if that is what you are looking for. Web surfing consumes less gas than driving around Dallas in 95 degree weather. Plus you can consume beverages at the computer that law enforcement frowns upon.

The Onkyo unit looks fine. If it helps I have one of these sitting in a closet. It used to drive speakers for my bedroom TV. I replaced it with an AV receiver last year. It doesn't have a single scratch. Looks and runs just like new. $75 and the shipping is on me. I doubt you can get yours fixed for that.

Now this is the reason this is the best forum ever because of members like you fmw. I'd take him on his generous offer that Is a great receiver with great features. You need to give it 8-10 inches of space, so the receiver can breathe. Change the OHM to 4 If there is an option on the 805, also get a laptop fan and put it on top on the receiver to keep it cool: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0070ZHY6G/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That is a generous offer. Strongly consider it. Also, you've got Craigslist, garage sales, rummage sales, etc, at your disposal.

That's a legendary receiver. I'd take a pass at fixing it yourself if you are so inclined. I'd offer a look, but my wife might kill me if I bring another broken audio piece in the house.

There are numerous options on CL though I prefer a forum member myself.

Take FMW up on his offer. That is a solid receiver for a great price and free shipping. Can't beat that. Other than that I would go with the Onkyo TX-8255 your looking at. It's a very solid receiver with a good track record. They typically go for around 140 at Amazon.

I have same unit Onkyo R-805x...same BZZZZT! and then dead.

Popped top case and replaced F type 1.25 fuse. Was surprised it didn't blow and appears nothing actually shorted. Put the unit back on my KEF Coda 7's. Clean loud sound for the 20 watt @ less than .6 THD. I understand there is also a 47 uf capacitor (C919) that can short out.
