Voice missing on DVD audio sound

Any suggestions for this issue from an audio luddite?

When I play DVD's I get the background sound through my amp and speakers fine but the voices of the characters has almost disappeared, it's really faint and you have to turn the volume up so loud that the backing music and other sounds are deafening. The problem has only just happened after a year of working fine. Is it a problem caused by my 3 young kids sitting on remote controls or is it a technical hardware issue?

The equipment is a Pioneer DV-3022V DVD player, a Yamaha RX - V571 AV receiver into a 7.1 speaker set up (also Yamaha NS-P80). The plasma TV is Samsung. All equipment is about 10 months old so still in warrantee period but time is running out so need to get sorted. Not to mention pressure being applied to dad via disgruntled offspring!

All suggestions welcome!

Thx, Paul.

It seems like your center channel is not playing. This could be a set up issue or a hardware issue.

First go to the speaker set up menu, and make sure the center speaker is selected. Then go through the test tones and make sure you can get the test tone form the center speaker.

If you can, make sure the center speaker is at the correct level. If you have an auto set up on that receiver use it to set speaker levels and distance, if not set levels by ear or spl meter.

If you can't get a test tone from your center speaker and it is selected, check that it is still connected at the receiver and speaker end.

If it is, then swap your center speaker for one you know works, like your left or right speaker. If no sound, do a receiver reset and start a new set up. If there is no sound then from the center channel, then it is receiver repair time or replacement.
