Nice read, nice find, the parallel transformer one is really interesting. I would really like to know how they managed to reduce the weight of their units over the years while increasing the power supply and amplifier capacities. I can guess/assume but don't really want to. Their weight are now inline with Marantz receivers, those have always been lighter, i.e. in the low 30's since the pre HDMI years. May be they learnt the technique from Marantz.

I could guess also- ie- aluminum heat sinks and fans? But the 3312 and 4520 both have very good amps and are pretty light. I'm not sure- but I would guess that the 36 lb 4520 can easily hang with the 55 lb Onkyo any day!

Yep, Denon makes excellent transformer, I bet you they are highly efficient too. I opened up my old 3805 last week, the transformer is huge physically but obviously not as heavy as the bigger Onkyo's such as the 805. It is however rated less than the 4520(I estimated it to be 80 to 85%) so size and weight is a good guide line only up to a point. The transformer in the 3805 looks just as big if not bigger.

The top cover is magnetic so it is not AL, but very light weight compared to my 35 years old Marantz. Putting it back on without bending it is a challenge due to its thin gauge. Aside from the old flag ship models I think the last time Denon made AVR heavier than 40 lbs are the 480X and the 4308 (41.6 lbs). Lab measurements show the 4308 output about the same as the 3808 that weights 39.2 lbs. Note that only the lighter 4311,4520 are rated for 4 ohm speakers, not even the 97 lbs 5805 though I am sure it can do it.

My Denon AVR3312ci in my computer room won't stream multi channel SACD from my Pioneer DV Player DV-610AV. The Pioneer streamed multi channel SACD to my Denon AVR-4520ci in the living room.
I've checked all the settings and am using a High Speed HDMI cable!

^^ ^ The 3312 cannot decode DSD, the 4520 can. Can you change configuration on the Pioneer to output PCM instead?

Batpig's saved my butt many times over the years, even after being hardened to Denon's previously horrible UI and manuals. They're getting easier though. While I thought the 4311 was a piece of cake compared to older models, my newest 2313 was a dream to set up.

My Denon AVR3312ci in my computer room won't stream multi channel SACD from my Pioneer DV Player DV-610AV. The Pioneer streamed multi channel SACD to my Denon AVR-4520ci in the living room.
I've checked all the settings and am using a High Speed HDMI cable!

I assume your DV610AV is an older universal player is it not? You may have to get into the menu and set it to output PCM because the 3312, like my AV7005, does not do DSD. The 4520 should have no problem doing it.

I'll take a guess
The most common is the use of copper clad aluminum transformer windings.
The same thing was done with the motor windings of many power tools back in the 80's.
As long as the wire terminations are made correctly and the wire's gauge is a little bigger, it works.

It's a very early 2008 player. I bought it about 2 years ago when my Denon 2910 bit the dust. It streamed fine to my Integra DHC-80.2 and to the Denon AVR-4520ci that replaced the Integra DHC-80.2.
I am able to send 2 channel PCM SACD only to the Denon AVR-3312ci. I workded the menu on both the AVR and the SACD player.

Sound like the limit is in the player. I had no trouble sending PCM from my Oppo (I think the Sony also) to the AV7005 and enjoyed 5.1 SACDs.

Yes- it's probably the player. It sends 2 channel SACD content to the 3312. I play it back in multichannel stereo- and it sounds very good. Just don't tell the golden ears!
