It would be except that it lacks a few current things that likely even much lower models have today (3D, hdmi pass through, etc...). If you don't need the features, then that thing's a beast.

While I would love to have it, at 100 lbs that thing would be a major PIA. I have a Pioneer that weighs 70 lbs, and moving that thing around is a massive hassle. I had it on a solid shelf, but the wood still bowed when I set it down there, so I had to brace the shelf and double the thickness. That Denon would need at least two guys to move around if you aren't a body-builder. It is well past the point where it's more sensible to just get a preprocessor and separate amps. It's a dumb unit targeted at the kind of guys who also go for Humvees.

If you needed 10 channels of power for a partially distributed system or a 9.2 setup or something, I don't see why not.

Was a great AVR in its day...
However times have changed and there are multiple new audio, video and connectivity technologies available the 5805 lacks...

They have the same mass.

But I don't know the weight since I can't remember what the gravity was on my planet Krypton.

ATI amps are sweet- especially 300W x 5! I really like my Outlaw 200W x 7. The ATI and Outlaw both have a weight problem. But skinny amps are'nt for everybody!

Agree, that's why I am thinking of adding cast iron balls around the heat sinks of my lightest one in order to improve the dynamics and add authority to the bass.

Funny thread. I have a 5805 and am looking to upgrade to a 7200WA. I have given pause and thought about making the jump to a pre/pro and using the 5805 as my amp. How is cross-channel noise? Is this a viable options?

At a 100 awkward pounds, it would be nice to utilize it as a amp just so I don't have to move it our of my basement.

If the 5805 had a bypass mode for all processing and preamplifier sections and allowed you to use it as a straight amplifier I would say yes, but I doubt it does. You'd get a perceptible amount of excess noise from two preamplifier stages and a whole lot of unnecessary clutter. If you want to go separates, go separates. If you want all in one, get the 7200wa.

It helps if you start a new thread for this kind of question. I almost didn't go to the bottom to read your post when I saw this thread was from 2013.
