Hello, I just purchased a Smart TV (Samsung 5 Series) and I am trying to connect it to my old surround sound receiver /amp (JVC). My receiver does not have HDMI nor does my DVD player. I managed to get the DVD player to work through the receiver, but I cannot get any audio from the TV to go through my receiver? I do not have any cable TV, so only Smart TV and DVD player. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kev

Look for the audio output on your TV. Most TV's have an Optical Digital Audio output. Connect that to the optical input on your receiver.

Since your receiver is older, you will need to connect the video outputs of the DVD player direct to the TV and the audio outputs to the receiver to hear the sound via the receiver. If you go the other direction, connecting the audio to the TV directly and use the optical to the receiver from the TV, you will most likely get stereo output only since analog inputs are limited on most newer TVs.

If you get a Blu-ray player with HDMI, you will be able to use the optical out from the TV to the receiver, providing the receiver has optical inputs.

i believe i have the same tv and in the past, this is if you have an auxiliary cable, i plug into receiver and the aux end i put into the standard audio out on your tv that shouldn't be colored just a hole. if i am unclear about this auxiliary cable i can give a picture of mine, in order for it to work i plug into the input wherever you find, or if you have a multi channel receiver that you can select which input you want just put it into any and your good.

The orginal post said "I managed to get the DVD player to work through the receiver, but I cannot get any audio from the TV to go through my receiver?"

The solution to his question of how to get TV audio to his receiver, is to connect his TV audio out to an input on his receiver. Most TVs have an optical output..
