Onkyo is dead, again.. Time for a new brand

Yamaha? It's not Sony, but aren't Yammies a bit err..umm...harsh?

Not sure where you got that from.....if anything ,yammie's would be at the other end of the spectrum...whatever the opposite of harsh is ?

Being an Integra owner, I am not going to lie, I was a little concerned about the bad mojo with Onkyo. It has been a well reported issue that Onkyo has had issues specifically with their HDMI boards in the past.

The DHC 80.3 is a monster in size, bigger than the Marantz and it definitely gets pretty warm. I make sure to give it enough airflow to limit the possibility of failure. Too often I have seen my friends try and squeeze gear into smaller spaces.

It's not too late to take it back and get something nicer. I've never had a problem with any Yamaha AVR I've owned, and so far my Denon's have been rock solid too.

I'm having fun w/ Audyssey not liking my 5.1 setup. This Onkyo might get returned to Fry's tomorrow!

Fry's has what appears to be a Harman Kardon AVR 2650 on sale for roughly $25 more than I paid for this Onkyo TX-NR 616. I'll give up the streaming apps (Yawn!), a buggy Android remote app, two HDMI ports which aren't directly accessible by my Harmony and one that is, Audyssey 2EQ (Yawn!), basic Marvell QDEO video processing (not a Yawn). I gain significantly better reliability, HK sound (Yes!), Faroujda video processing (Yuck!) and a way better looking piece of metal in my AV cabinet.

I stand corrected. They also have the Yammy RX V673 and the Denon 1913 on sale for $399 like the HK. There's a top of my budget Yammy RX-A820 (Aventage line) for $549, too!

HK isn't quite what it used to be. Methinks I will be getting a Denon (if they have them in stock).

No Denons or Yammy's in stock. I bought a HK AVR 2650 (open box ). The auto setup recognized my surrounds without issue. Of course, it got the distances (and likely the levels) all FUBAR. But, I can fix that with a little measuring tape.

No more Onkyo for me. I'm back to being one of 12 people in the world still running a HK receiver.

I don't my 5 year old Onkyo TX-SR805 with 0 issues so far (knocking on the wood) , which is notorious for overheating issues get to hear about this....
but yea, with my next AVR I'm going to Denon for sure

Makes sense. Denon and Yammy (and *cough* Sony) seem to be the reliability kings. There are even some not so good buzzes about the Marantz SR 5007.

Hopefully the Integra's are ok. They are supposed to be GMC to Onkyo's Chevy.

My Onkyo 805 is running fine as well but I when I purchased it, I also installed a home-built fan unit on top of it because I had heard of the overheating issues myself.

I figure that adding additional cooling is probably a good idea for any receiver.

All that said, my old Yamaha RX-v992 is built like the proverbial tank and refuses to die. I can easily see it being more robust than my Onkyo.

I'm a bit skeptical about Sony reliability. I went through two of the low-end Sony receivers because of errors by other people where they shorted out the speaker terminals (I think). Now, I know that is a bad thing but what's the point in having fuses if the fuses don't protect against that obvious user error. I switched my parents over to Yamaha and have had no issues since then.

Dont know about you guys but Ive had Onkyos for 6yrs now.. a 605 1st and just recently an 818 and never ever have had any problems with either one.. Maybe just lucky I guess. Oh BTW I love them.. Almost got a Denon but went back for more Onk.

Nope. My HK AVR 2650 kept dropping audio. I bought a Yammy VX-575 (over the Pioneer VSX-1023 for the same price) then slapped myself and returned it. I went to A&B TV and bought a Yammy A720 for $50 cheaper than the VX-575 (Screw you, Fry's!).

I'm now a Yammy owner. (Well, better than owning another Sony or a non-elite Pioneer.)

Pioneer or Yamaha. Last year I went from an Onkyo (no issues) to Emotiva separates. While I had very good experience with previous Onkyo, just based on what appears to be a rise in complaints the last 2 or 3 years, I would likely avoid them if going back to a receiver. Their Integra line seems to be quite solid overall, but that's a different kettle of fish.
