How many speakers do you own?

Been trying to downsize my speaker quantity as I thought I had too much, sold quite a few lately as well as a Denon 3312.

Down to...

L/R

EMP E41b x2
EMP E5Ti x2
RBH T-2/R x2

Center
RBH T-1/R

Subs
Rythmik FV15HP x2(Plus the RBH 1010-SE/R units of the T-2's) x2

So I'm at 7 speakers and 2 (4) subs. Seems as if I'm lacking compared to many here!
You have sane numbers of speakers. :D

I have a 7.1, 5.1 and three two-channel systems. Plus two portable bluetooth speakers. You do the math.

That depends on many circumstances. Obviously, a manufacturer or a dealer will have many speakers that they are not using, and do not intend to use for themselves. Their purpose is for sales. Any number that they have room for and can afford to make or purchase and that they could reasonably expect to sell for profit is a sane number. Now, someone who is an end user, and only an end user (some are more than just this, as some buy and sell used gear for profit), would ideally have enough speakers to cover all of their uses, and not too many more (though a spare or two might be reasonable, if one has the extra space for them). I personally have 4 systems set up (one of which is a surround system), not including computer speakers (which, if counted, would make for 5 systems). I use them all, though not all of them are used very often. I have some extra speakers, though some of them were purchased for reselling, and some for projects that have not taken place; i.e., someone changed his or her mind about what was wanted. I have too many, and should get rid of some, though given all of the circumstances, it probably does not qualify as an insane number (though really this should be judged by others rather than me). [And if it is an insane number, many who post here are in much greater need of help than I am.]

An insane number is having so many that they cannot be used, and are just cluttering up one's space, making a person's life worse than it would be without them. Notice, this is space dependent, not a specific number. Another insane number of speakers would be a number that costs the person so much money that it makes their life worse than it would otherwise be. Notice, this is dependent upon individual finances, not a specific number.

Basically, if you are a hoarder (in this case, of speakers) who psychiatrists would generally regard as in need of help, then you have an insane number. Otherwise, you may claim to have a sane number of speakers. Needless to say, there is a gray area in this, where it is questionable whether one has a sane or insane number of speakers.

It is also worth mentioning that if a person's goal is the best possible sound, usually the proper method will be having fewer, better speakers, rather than a bunch of lesser ones. Many people would have had significantly better sound if they had saved all of the money that they spent on the extra speakers and just bought one really good set of speakers with that money instead. Many could still do this by selling off their stockpile of speakers and using all of the proceeds on one good set of speakers. (I write "set", as one might be looking for a surround system, rather than a stereo pair.) But with hoarders, the best sound isn't really the point.
Hmmm... that's a touch judgmental, don't you think? I mean, I'm the last guy to personally get defensive, since I have a grand total of four speakers and a subwoofer, but insane is a pretty strong word to describe someone's else's idea of a harmless good time. Do you think my friend ADTG is insane? I think he's just having a smashing good time, and my only thought is that I'm happy for him. I wished we lived closer so that I could hear his collection.

I know people who have a room full of guitars. One friend has maybe ten saxophones. My own wife has turned a floor of our house into an instrument warehouse, what with three full drum kits, a piano, a vibraphone, and an assortment of associated accessories. Are these musicians insane? (Okay, controversial question. :) )

I also know someone who has taken over an entire floor of his house with model railroading, a hobby I do not understand at all, frankly. I do know he's as passionate about that model railroad as I am about my audio system, probably more so.

I like to associate with people who are passionate about something that makes them happy and does no harm to others. I think they're generally more interesting than people who are "sane", whatever that is, like people who aren't truly passionate about anything.

DenPureSound (RIP) used to call me all the time, even when I was at work. I loved talking to him. :D

Occasional his wife would (rudely :D) interrupt our conversations. She would incessantly (& annoyingly) ask, "Why do you waste your money on so many speakers? Why can't you be happy with just one set of speakers? I don't think you will ever be happy!"

Of course, I patiently and nicely told her that I was completely happy with ALL my speakers and that this was just a hobby. Some people collect cars, motorcycles, jewelry, coins, purses, shoes, etc. I collect speakers. Absolutely harmless.

Life is tough. If this hobby helps us for even a little bit in any way, then good for us! We deserve it! ;)

Grand total of 13 in a 2 bedroom condo. Four more on the street as it were. I'm awaiting payment so technically those are still mine. I don't want to use the word insane because of the legal ramifications but 'crazy'? ... yeah, this is crazy. What's even crazier is that I need a bigger TV. :D

Start with this:

Then, very carefully and slowly, reread my post for its exact meaning. And no, "insane" is not too strong a word for some people. But it obviously does not apply to everyone who has a lot of speakers, and I never said that it does, which you already know if you did not misread what I wrote.

If I'm gonna ever start hoarding anything, it's for sure 100% no doubt about it going to be speakers ... and maybe amps.

What fun would this hobby be if didn't involve a little mental illness?

The key word is "causing significant distress and impairment".

If it brings us joy and relaxation, then it's not hoarding or insanity.

I read what you posted, and I didn't misread it. Actually, I think it fits right in with the tone of some of your other posts.

Perhaps in theory, but in practice, it is a bit more complicated. For example, one typically does not find out if someone has a problem with alcohol by simply asking the person about it. The same is true of hoarding.

So you're saying we need some CAGE-like questions for trouble speaker-purchasers?

Alcohol isn't a problem - it's a solution.

Wait - it doesn't mean anything that I think that, does it?
