Just bought a denon dvd1740 ...was hoping it would an improvement over my onkyo for playing the occasional cd, (which it is) but For some reason my optoma h30a is now only displaying 540p
The dvd player wont let me select 760 for some reason....
Hdmi is running through a yam 667

Checked all the menu's
Sure it was running 760p with the onkyo

DVD max video resolution is 480i. So to get a higher resolution requires up scaling which is a fudge anyway.

So you need to look at the up scaling potential of you player and receiver. Usually the receiver does the up scaling. So i would have the DVD player output bitstream, and have the receiver do the up scaling.

As an aside, I have no idea why you spent good money on a player that only plays CD and DVD.

If your player is connected to your receiver by HDMI, CD will output two channel PCM over HDMI and the DVD bitstream over HDMI. The receiver is setting the audio standard as far as conversion is concerned.

You could have bought a very nice Panasonic BD player on Amazon for less than half the cost of that unit, and been far further ahead.

People just don't get that bits are bits, and in a set up like yours you are just using the disc reader. You can't change your audio quality by changing players, that is myth, that really needs a vigorous debunking.

If you don't like your sound look to your speakers. Hint: - most on offer are awful, so generally there is room for huge improvement.

Most of what TLS is saying about upscaling images is true, but if you're in a PAL/SECAM region 576i is the non-scaled full frame DVD output.

Yes, I suppose the OP might be in a PAL/SECAM region. However the bottom line is the same. He needs up scaling to get where he wants. I wish people would post where they live!

Right
I live in the uk...
I'm (or at least ,... I was ) 100% convinced that my cd's sound
A hell of alot better with the denon than with the onkyo.
(Which sounded pretty awful)
The dvd's connected via co-axial and hdmi.
I only play dvd's..no bluray.
Only paid £25 for the denon from ebay,
Money burning a hole in my paypal :)
I May just connect up denon for cd duties alone and
Connect the onkyo back up for film's,never had a problem with it for dvd's

How do you have the players connected to your receiver? If they are connected digitally via HDMI, then I don't buy there is a difference in the sound. If there was a problem you would have digital artifacts, like pops and snaps. If the error correction is not being exceeded then there is no difference as SQ is entirely set by your receiver.

Both were Connected with co-axial and hdmi.
Co-axial for sound afaik.
I've now moved denon to cd duties via analogue
And put onkyo back on to home theatre

Would have been interesting to do a side by side comparison
For music..but i'm short on cables

Because the difference 'seemed' night and day

I've been into this for years and still
Get confused with all the different wiring/format's
What's doing what and going where....god only know's
How your average joe is expected to get a grip of this.

As you had a digital connection, there could not have been a difference.

So after much carry on and menu surfing ...i got the denon passing audio through hdmi...only to turn the projector off
And the audio dissapeared....aarrgghh

Hopefully i can turn hdmi control off on that one channel.
If i can't,
I presume that for 2 channel listening , a co-axial cable will
Do the same job ?

Unless you are trying to pass the new loss less codecs, yes a digital coax connection will do the same job. You will need to change that input to coax digital.

I suspect you have a set up error. If I get time I will see if I can download your manual tonight.

Where is Adam? This is his job!
