After connecting, i have to turn the volume up very high to get sound when playing vinyl, much higher than when i am listening to CDs or the tuner, meaning after listening to vinyl, i have to turn the volume down a lot to hear CDs or tuner. If I forget, then i get a very loud blast in my ears when changing from vinyl to CD.
What can I do ?
Your Yamaha receiver lacks a dedicated PHONO (turntable) input. Phono cartridges (needles) put out low voltage, much lower than any other sources and the receiver's regular inputs are LOOKING for a much higher voltage, 10-100 times more than a standard moving magnet cartridge and 100-1000 times larger for a typical moving coil cartridge.
You will need to buy a dedicated phono preamp and plug that in between the turntable and the receiver input you wish to use. THEN your Technics turntable will play loud enough to enjoy.
Phono preamps can come cheap, though cheap ones are not all that great. I'd suggest if your budget allows to check out ones that are a bit better than the cheapest ones you may find. I'd say minimum $100 and up. You can go sky high though but do not have to in order to get great sound. There are $100-$200 ones that will get you going well.
GOOD LUCK, vinyl playback can be a lot of fun and if you are one who LIKE'S TO JUST SIT DOWN TO LISTEN to music, vinyl may really be a tonic for audio pleasure.
