I've had the oppo for about 6 months now; until recently it was hooked up to an old Sony receiver via rca cables. Recently, just before Christmas a friend of mine asked to use my home for a concert viewing she had obtained (professionally done) on DVD. I was a bit embarrassed when she put the DVD in the player and although we had picture, there was no sound. Eventually we circumvented the problem by hooking up a laptop and enjoyed the concert. In addition to that issue I had purchased some classic movie collections from Movies Unlimited and they would not play on the player either. Well after the concert disaster I was bound and determined to "fix" my home theatre. Initially I began rerunning cable using various hookups to try and alleviate the problem. I am a former software test manager and I have a lot of patience; I believe I found every variation possible and tested it (most of it probably didn't make any sense). After that I decided to make life easier on myself and get an updated receiver, a Marantz 350w slimline. It seemed to have all the HDMI hook-ups I would need and although not top of the line I believed it would serve my home theatre issues.

So now to make a long story longer, here is what I have hooked up and what my current problem is:

Samsung 55 inch Smart TV
Marantz 350w model NR1602
Oppo BDP 93
AT&T HD cable box

The BDP and cable are hooked up via HDMI to the receiver and I'm using the HDMI monitor out on the receiver to the TV. Although I don't believe it matters in this case, the speakers currently in use are Bose. When I first hooked this all up the other day I actually could not play anything on the BDP and I mean nothing. So last night after work I thought I better start testing HDMI cables and here is what I found out. I can actually get the BDP to work using a workaround. I have to insert the disk of choice, close the tray and then turn the machine OFF! After it has shut down completely I restart the BDP and then I will get a message on the TV screen; "not support" on the right of the screen and "load" on the left of the screen. The disk loads up and plays beautifully. So currently I have to go through this "set-up" each time I want to play a disk of any kind. Please advise.

It kind of sounds like a handshake problem to me.

However, why don't you just call Oppo? I don't have experience with them, but the rumor is that Oppo has the best customer service in the business.

Oftentimes the order in which you turn on the devices will cause handshake issues. Generally you should turn on the TV first because it is the sink and will wait for other devices to initiate the handshake. Turn on the receiver next, followed by the Oppo. If you use a universal remote to automate things you may also try inserting a delay after turning on the TV and before turning on the other devices as the TV may take a second or two to be ready.

Try messing with the order and see if that helps. All of your devices should work flawlessly together.

The Oppo BDP-93 has a very robust video section with a host of setting options. It is possible that some setting is creating a conflict on specific discs. Pg. 54 of the manual has details on how each video setting option affects output. Can you tell us what values you have for the video settings?
