onkyo tx-nr 515 sound help

so i decided to upgrade to an onkyo 515 from an older Sony w\ componet connections all wired up, hdmi cables, bose speakers, did firmware update but i still think my older sony had better theater sounds. any one have any suggestions for me to help improve my set up ?

the older sony would have sounds coming at us from all different directions with action packed movies and i am not getting that with the onkyo,

What is the front panel saying the output mode is? Does it indicate a surround sound mode or one of the simpler 5 channel stereo modes? Did you check the source format?

it is saying dts. and as for source format i would have no idea. i know we have tried different settings on our b. ray dvd player.
