the directions for setup to my new Energy 5.1 speakers say "the sub is to be connected to the receiver using a standard male to male rca cable" What is this exactly? a friend said its one of the red, yellow ,white 3 prong cables which I have but that doesnt seem right. its only 4ft anyway. Can anyone help me? do I need to purchase one? about how much are they? thanks guys.

Your friend is correct. You should not purchase an RCA type cable if you have one already lying around. Don't worry I use for my sub and it's a custom build. There is no need to spend 100 dollars on a cable.

thanks

So I have the three color cable. Do I just use the white then and leave the others hang there? should I tear it off? it is only about 4-6ft, I thought subs shouldnt be that close to the receivers?

I'd take off the yellow since no one really uses that anymore. You might have use for a red and white pair. But it really doesn't matter. You can also use component video cables which are the same thing FYI. You have to go really far with the signal to lose quality I think it's like 1000 feet.

If I may add a bit.
You will need a longer cable to slide you sub around the room to see / hear where it sounds the best.
It may be a few ft from the receiver or it may not.
I have mine connected with coax cable, since I ran it under the floor (basement) and into the wall to the other side of the room.

I found a longer one. So just to be sure, I should use the red cable? And I should have good quality sound, right?

I forget about this since my sub is passive. Be sure to try out various spots with your sub to get the best sound.

Color doesn't matter, here is a good inexpensive cable that Rickster was talking about, they are available in many lengths. This one is 15' and will give you some flexibility with placement. Hope this helps.

Heck, you can go to any well equipped dollar store an pickup any red/wite (or yellow) cable with RCA ends on it of a suitable length and use any single cable and leave the others dangling. Or, you might be able to neatly pull them apart. Then you'll have two "subwoofer" cables for the price of one. That's what I did and I would up wit two 12' sub cables, one with red plugs, one with white, for a buck..

Color doesn't matter as long as it doesn't clash with the rug. (joke)

One note about the red/white/yellow cable that you might have around - the yellow one is likely better shielded (from RF interference). Video cables tend to have more shielding on them, and that's what the yellow one is.

I always purchase component cables from MonoPrice for all my cable needs. They strip apart easily and I get 3 cables out of the deal for dirt cheap.

This company makes some really good inexpensive cables, there were favorably reviewed by a fellow member, especially good are the video cables, which can also be used for audio applications. I have a few and they are very good indeed. Only problem, they are out of stock on a lot of product. Just ordered some component cables to use as MCH analog interconnects. Check them out.
