Found some videos on YouTube of home made power amps that seem to work any one else seen anything like it or done it them selves?

I built one of the parts express class d kits, not really much to do, plug in p-supply and mount in chassis.. cheap, I gave it to my brother who used in with an avr that had a damaged amp section, not sure if he still has it...

I haven't had a chance to check out your posted vids yet, but I'll take a look.

What were you thinking? One of the chip-amps or hypex modules?

I just completed a Dyncao ST-70 tube-amp kit that is awesome, but tubes.

It worked but I messed up the board a little trying to mount it in the chassis, nothing that changed performance {I don't think}, but I had to glue it a little, shaquad... This was really easy, not like the kits where you have to do a lot of soldering, not that that is hard, but more labor than plugging in a power supply and mounting it in a chassis with some banana posts...

I like the whole shebang of a bag of parts and 30 hrs of work to get a nice piece of gear. More difficult, takes more skill, nice product, but a real chance for a big mistake. You can certainly build equal performance with better parts than a commercial amp, for less $.

Also, you learn a lot along the way. And when the day comes that something malfunctions, I will have no problems popping the cover and finding the problem. Or, if I ever feel like upgrading electrical components, then I can do it. It isn't for everyone.

I was thinking about building an amp from parts from parts express. However, I'm not sure it makes economic sense for the high powered class D route (as opposed to tubes.) If you look at PE amp specs they tout a watts/channel but if you look at the details it's into 2 or 4 ohms with 10% THD!

Like this $90 - '2x300' TAS5630 Class-D Amplifier Board, specs are Power output (w/ 50 VDC power supply): 300W x 2 (4 ohms, THD 10%), 160W x 2 (8 ohms, THD 10%), 240W x 2 (4 ohms, THD 1%)[h=1][/h]http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=320-309

Or the $99.99 1x600 w/ch one which in the details is a 10% thd spec into 2 ohms, the 8 ohm spec is 1x200 with .4 thd.

Two of those plus a power supply is over $300, for which you can get a crown xls drivecore 1000, which will do 550 w/ch into 2 ohms, 215 w/ch into 8.

Personally, I don't think I would be doing any class D builds anyway, but you make a pretty good point.

I was thinking more along the lines of A or A/B (and of course tubes).
