lol.

I have video too but it has my stupid voice on it so I didn't bother to upload. Plus it's shaky as hell because I was shivering my balls off. Hopefully USAA gives me something decent for my old one (2006 sonata gl, 67,000 miles), but I'm only looking at sub-20k vehicles :D

ehh... Not Korean ;)
Sub 20k mid-large size sedan - I'd look for couple years old Subaru Legacy (preferably 2.5 GT variant)

Come on - that's totally fixable. :D

Just kidding, man! Sorry that happened, but I'm happy that you didn't get hurt. Btw, you can edit out the audio from videos pretty easily (at least on Macs) if you decide that you want to show it.

Honestly, I didn't think that it was your car until I read further down.

I don't have any particular cars in mind, other than cheap ones :D I'm looking at new vehicles cuz I want a longer warranty and used vehicles seem to carry their value pretty well (at least here in north texas). I'm also wanting something compact with good mileage. I am in no way attached to the size of the sonata and would have been very happy with something smaller. I also never learned to drive a manual so I'm looking at automatics only >_>

Not sure what caused the fire. I was on my way to work from my allergist, when my car started to sound weird. I exited the highway, turned around, and got back on to head to my dealership. Then there was a pop, and some smoke started coming out of my tailpipes. I thought that was really bad so I decided to exit as soon as I could and find somewhere to park. By the time I got somewhere safe and not blocking traffic, I lost power steering, I lost my brakes, and I was stuck in first or second gear. I stopped in that parking lot and got out because there was a hell of a lot of smoke and then fire :( Heard a few loud pops and my hood bulged and then there was a LOT of fire. The fire dept got there pretty quickly, but it was definitely too late. Was outside for about 2 hours with the fire dept and then waiting for the tow truck. Was pretty cold :(

I've never edited a video before (plus i'm not on a mac), but maybe I'll upload it one day. Too bad I didn't get any pictures of the actual fire.

I assume you're all over Hyundai on this. Depending on what happened, perhaps they'll get to buy you a new car for the new year :D

"Your car burst into flames while I was driving, and I have it on tape!!!"

Something like that? :p

Yeah, probably won't mean much. No telling what caused it - yet. Was it under any sort of warranty?

You got me looking at our local craigslist. You can always buy an extended warranty for any used car if you don't do well budgeting for repairs. I warn you that the markup is insane. I suggest you simply budget the remaining 20k in a sinking fund for repairs. You won't gain interest, but the profit margins are insane in the extended warranty market.

Some interesting looks on craigslist
Lexus
2007 LEXUS ES 350 BLACK EXCELLENT CONDITION 42K MILES
BMW(Sure the maintenance is a little higher, but budget for it and you'd have an amazing car.)
2005 BMW 325CI COUPE
Mazda 3s(only 8k) Very nice looking deal. I
2004 Mazda 3s Hatchback 2.3L Only 102k miles

If you are not made of money I suggest the Mazda 3. With some quality tires my 3s has excellent handling and acceleration.

I've had a car catch fire before. It's pretty crazy.

Adam, the car had a 10 year/100k mile powertrain warranty :)

lsiberian, I'm definitely not made of money D:

the car I'd be looking at would need to be financed because I have no money to buy a car because I make poor financial decisions like not having any money. I do like the mazda3 though. I am considering a new one :D

You may need a lawyer, but I'd think your insurance company would be willing to help to some extent. If nothing else, they should be investigating the cause of the fire to rule out things like fraud; if they can point their finger at Hyundai, then I'd think you'd have something to work with. Either way, as Adam said..."Your car burst into flames while I was driving, and I have it on tape!!!" would be a good start with Hyundai just so they're aware of the issue :D

Assuming you have good credit. You could get a loan for a private party from a local bank. With the current interest rates you'd get like two percent. Is your car still under loan? I assume you have full coverage(it's dirt cheap) so you could pay off the loan once you got the insurance money.

Yeah, Steve, hopefully USAA can help me out.

The car was paid off and I did still have full coverage. I definitely wouldn't say my insurance was dirt cheap though. Wasn't too expensive either, however. I have decent credit. I'm not going to rush into any purchases like I did with the Sonata. I have up to 90 days of rental coverage from my insurance :)

Anyway, here's one of the videos. Sorry for having the phone vertical instead of horizontal:

"How's it going?" Hahaha!!! That cracked me up. :D

"Well, my car is burning in front of me and I'm cold, but other than that...pretty good, I guess."
