Beater "party" speakers?

Hey guys.

A friend of mine who knows I'm into audio has asked me to pick out some budget speakers for big house parties. I sold him a pair of bookshelfs awhile ago which he then proceeded to blow the tweeters immediately after I sold them to him. So, that's not going to work. He also has an old Sony receiver that seems to pack a pretty serious punch, power-wise. I don't know the specs, but somewhere between 100-135watts/channel. It's a 5.1 channel receiver w/ two zones.

He's got a 12" sub, maybe made by Infinity? Seems like a semi-decent thing, good output in the 40-60hz range which is pretty much all he needs.

So, does anyone have recommendations for some cheap, high-output speakers? Easy to drive, etc. Size is not an issue, price is. Should I scour Craigslist?

Thanks.

Without mentioning what the price range is I'm not sure how much anyone can help. Looking on ebay and craigslist is probably a good idea though; if he's that hard on speakers then used may be the best option.

Under $100 for a pair. He doesn't need to drive multiple zones or anything - Just 2.1.

If you play that thing loud enough, odds are more tweeters will get blown but if you can find any, some big box DCM KX series speakers or big Cerwin Vega! speakers are two likely candidates for the virgin scarifice.

If it's a Sony; then I seriously doubt it packs much of a punch as you say.
The receiver is most likely being driven to clipping and will most likely destroy any speaker in it's way at high volumes.
CV speakers are probably the best bet.

At least their cheap and replacable.:)

I would opt for a single powered pro style speaker and spend a little more.. and get rid of the receiver all together just pug in your ipod or iphone directly...

I have mine all hooked into a D1 dac, that I plug directly into my laptop or my ipad {via pure i20}, then I use the dac as a volume control, it is stupid loud, and even at deafening levels crystal clear, with deep bouncy bass that feels like it will stop your heart inside a closed room... we have a huge inground pool area and I had some 20a outlets installed where I move the speakers for parties on each side of the outdoor bar, and I have a 3acre yard that when we have parties we get a few carnival rides brought in {my uncle owns OKS amusements and brings me what ever I ask for} and even at the other end of the yard you can hear the music clear as day.... We had a party for the kids this summer and brought in a 40ft ferris wheel, a portable rockwall, and this HUGE 40 foot tall inflatable water slide... You could hear the music 300ft away and 40 feet high, lol
