General Questions about set up

Hi guys I have a few questions about my home theater set up. I have the Denon 3313CI, HTD level 3 4 bookshelf and 1 center. I have 2 bookshelves in the front left and right. I have the other 2 bookshelves hooked up to the surround left and right. And the center hooked up to the center.

1.) I have the HSU ULS-15. I've placed it in the corner of my room. Should I position it with the speaker part facing the wall?

2.) When I watch tv the volume is significantly lower than when I listen to music. For instance when I listen to Internet radio I put the volume on 50. When watching tv I have to put it on 68 to achieve the same volume. I have Verizon fios with a set up box and I made sure there is no volume restrictions coming from the box.

3.) is there a way to get all the speakers to play at the same volume when I'm listening to music?

Thanks

It shouldn't matter which way the sub is facing.. Did you do a crawl to find the best placement? There are a few articles on Audioholics discussing sub placement.. Subs require trial and error for best placement. If you think it would sound better in another place, move it there and pop in a movie to test it.

Different sources may play at different volumes. I'm not sure that there's a way to make all sources play at the same one.. I think that's what you were asking about. If you're asking why don't your actual speakers play at the same volume (ie: you've got sound from the front L/R, but want sound from all 5), then you'll need to cycle through your audio modes to find one that compensates. Something like PLIIx Music or if it has a 5 Channel Stereo mode, that would work too

1. The orientation of the subwoofer driver and ports/passive radiators, changes the location of the source of bass sound waves with respect to front and side walls. Consequently, the orientation and distance to walls (and floor and ceiling) will affect the room gain and room mode excitation. Meaning, closer you get the driver to the wall/corner, more the room gain, giving some low end extension, some loudness, and more modal excitation, giving, more unevenness in FR. Moving the driver away from the walls/corner reduces the intensity of room gain and modal excitation. It is a balancing act, getting most out of the sub while trying to get the flattest FR in most locations.

I recommend trying all orientations, rotating clockwise, the left corner placed sub,
  • facing room
  • facing side wall
  • facing corner (angled 45 degrees)
  • facing front wall
  • facing away from side wall
  • facing away from corner (angled 45 degrees)

You can even try the other 45 degree offset positions, but, I suspect that will be overkill :).

Last but not the least, remember that phase and time alignment change depending on orientation of the driver. So, run auto setup or adjust those parameters as needed to achieve the result that pleases the most.

Thanks. Multi Channel Stereo mode did the trick. I noticed the subwoofer doesn't kick on in the mode. Any way I can get the sub to fire on that mode?

As far as the sub I don't have a choice where to put it for now. So I wouldn't be able to do the sub crawl.

Hi. I skimmed through the manual and didn't see any mention that the sub wouldn't normally be on in that listening mode. So, a couple of questions:

1. Are your speakers set to "Small"?

2. If they are set to "Small", what is the setting for the crossover?
