well if some of you have read my thread about the emotiva sale, i just received my xpa-5. Well after playing music tonight i found that my right front speaker was distorting. Checked it all out seemed ok. So after playing around i noticed when my xpa-5 turns on (no interconnects plugged in, amp off the floor, plugged directly into the wall, 1 speaker hooked up with locking banana plugs, it doesn't matter where the speaker wire is hooked up, when the amp hits the 4th channel when it goes through its test on start up, i get a louder then normal static sound. When it goes through 1-3 i hear dead silence, it hits 4 loud static, when its done the 5th channel i hear a constant very low static (which i know can be normal with this amp. But the 4th channel seems odd to me, and thats the channel my speaker was distorting on at loud volume. I tried the blow dryer trick to get right of static charge. But other then that is the 4th channel pooched? ill have to try to call emo tomorrow i guess. I sent the lady i dealt with an e-mail, but am curious what you guys think. Just seems weird that i can hear that hiss clearly through all speakers when it hits the 4th channel, even when no speaker wire or interconnect is plugged into 4th channel.

**just hooked up 1 set of speaker wires and 1 interconnect into the amp, speaker is quiet until 4th channel then gives off the hiss, then when its fully powered up dead silence. So the constant hiss is gone when the interconnect is connected, but still when it goes across the 4th channel it still hiss's on every channel**

will do.
I tested my speaker that was on the 4th channel and i heard the distortion, on my mrx just now, and its confirmed my midrange driver must be on its way out as it distorts pretty easily. I guess the xpa just brought it to my attention easier or made it worse a lot quicker.

But i still need to find out why my xpa hiss's on the 4th channel when going through its start up test. I forgot us had its thanksgiving today so emo was closed, ill see what they say tomorrow and post up. Ive found a thread or 2 about this problem but no one ever posts up what the end result is

do you think that it could have damaged my driver? or that my driver was already damaged prior and i just didnt know? Just seems odd and i thought i would have picked up on it before hand.

Well becuase i live in canada i cant get a direct replacement. So i talked to a tech and he said ch 4 is faulty and is sending me a new one. Now i have to try and solder myself the speaker terminals on it or pay someone to do it. Emo wont cover any other charges. So i just spent all that money to fix it myself and spend more money on it. yay..

Was it due to customs related considerations?

Since you or a non-Emo tech will have to get into it, what does it mean for the guarantee/warrantee if there are future issues? Might be good to have that spelled out before you dive in.

It is a pretty crappy situation, but I hope the end of your tribulations.

they didnt say why. I think its totally unfair. I could see if the unit was 30 days old then yes send me the part and ill pay someone to fix it. But right from the factory and this. It really frustrates me. They said their warranty only covers parts, Unless i send it to them which i would have to pay BOTH ways. I would have liked to at least see them cover the charges for me to pay someone. I can solder, but im used to brazing A/C lines. So i will take a peak at it tonight to see. The tech said the speaker connections are thick and you need a iron that will get hot enough, which i dont think mine does, so that means buying another.

It's within the 30 day money back period for Emo?

Ship it back for a full refund. Is there some reason you can't b/c you live in Canada?

The one thing with Emo, they almost always get good remarks for customer service, so make them put that to use.

+1. Sounds like you spoke with a moron, that kind of support makes no sense whatsoever. If that's the way they do business, I won't be purchasing any of their products. Wow.

You will need a hot iron for the speaker wires, but since you braze line sets I take it you have a tank and torch set, what I do sometimes when Im on sight and have to solder a wire, is get my btank/torch setup and heat up a nail held by a vise grip, it works perfectly and fast....

That is just odd, especially since this is within the first 30 day trial period. Try PM-ing KeithL, the resident Emo Rep.

i sent a msg to kieth on here over the weekend, no reply yet. To be honest, yes it should have been sent back. But thats not really what im 100% mad about, its the fact that they are not going to cover my bill to have someone do it. Now i asked the local paradigm dealer where my speaker is getting delt with, that they would do it for $15 which is fair, but again not the point. I looked through pages and pages on emo's forum and again found tones of ppl with good things to say about their customer service, so i think i need to talk to someone higher up there, then the lady who answers the phone.

Also not sure if i stated this or not, but the day after i added the amp into my setup, my right side main was on ch 4 (the faulty ch) and the mid range driver is now distorting all the time. Now i dont think i can prove that the amp did it, but that just add's to the whole mix as i have to dish out $139 + tax for a new driver.

On the other hand thankfully my mini-x amp is working great and i want to order the xda-2 but im nervous because of this whole issue.

Dunno, maybe register on the Emo forums and log a complaint there. I know the owners of Emo are on those forums sometimes, so that could get it onto the radar.

I don't get it. Doesn't their satisfaction guaranteed or your money back policy hold for Canadian orders?

This is so weird. For all of the negative publicity they're getting on this thread - in front of their primary audience - they could have shipped you an overnight replacement and come out ahead. When my ERC-2 went south after months of use, Emotiva was helpful and fast on the fix. You would think they would stand behind their products regardless of where they are sold.

Did they warn you of special restrictive conditions when you ordered?

I would not talk to the girl that answers the phone, out of everyone I have dealt with there {I have bought 15 emotiva products this year, 7 of which are amps, 3 pros, ect} she is the only one, I don't feel gives any effort to make me feel like the reason I'm calling isn't a burden... She is always short, in a hurry, and seems to be angry about something. I could guess what she needs but that wouldn't be productive to your thread.
I would call back and talk to someone in the sales department, if that doesn't work talk to the owner and record it on the phone. If he isn't sympathetic to the situation, post the audio and start an Emotiva bashing campaign... with pictures and sound clips , Believe it or not, but things like this thread will cost them more than you expect... I am in the HVAC field, and I recently refunded an entire job {$2900} because one of my employees was abusive to the customer {she is hard to deal with, but he told her off for it, and that is not how I pay him to behave}, 1 bad review is worth 100 good ones, and emo has a few now...
If you let your CS go downhill you won't last long, just ask av123

No i didnt know anything about the "canadian" warrenty of there products. So i tried tonight, and that part of their site is "down"...

Imcloud, yes she seemed the same way to me on the phone.. I am also in the hvac business and yes it is very hard to deal with people sometimes but you have to try to keep everyone happy. Im not here to really bash the company as i love their products and prices. But you cant favor the states because (or i think this is why) shipping is cheaper for them for warranty work. I guess ill just see how i make out tomorrow. Im on the fence on buying the XDA-2 right now because of this whole situation. If they can make it right and make it right, the way it should have been, i will order it. But even after or if this comes out the proper way, its shouldent have to come down to this. It should be a set standard and thats it. You take care of your customers the way it should be! Ill update tomorrow when i talk to Vincent.

Emo is following their FAQ, on international orders, to the letter.

If the Paradigm dealer tech can document that the board is defective, you might have a claim to Emo covering the cost of speaker repair.

Should the mini-x (or any other Emo product) require service, you'll be in a similar predicament. IMHO, this is not a gamble I'd want to take. Heck I'd even offload the XPA-5 once it is repaired.
