AV volume adjustment disturbs video

I've searched around for help with this problem but can find nothing.
I'm not actually sure whether the problem is with the AV receiver, PVR or TV.

I have a new Yamaha RX-V473. On HDMI1 I have a Humax Freesat PVR. On HDMI3 an Apple TV. The HDMI out of the AV receiver goes to HDMI1 on a Panasonic TV.

When the TV is set to the receiver - and the receiver is on HDMI1 (the Humax) and I adjust the volume up/down via the AV receiver - the following happens.
Screen goes blank displaying:-
HDMI1 Wide
576p input Wide
16:9
576p input 16:9
Then the picture comes back. The volume disappears at certain points throughout.

If I do the same steps with the Apple TV (e.g. streaming/playing a music video from iTunes) the volume simply goes up and down.

I have examined settings and tried to understand the issue - but to no avail. Grateful for any help or advice.

Any help or advice gratefully received as this is not going to pass muster with the family.

Sounds like an HDMI handshake issue. Thank the movie industry with their DRM! Are all the products HDCP compliant? If no, then that is most likely your problem.

If you are lucky, it might just be a cable or a bad connection. Try a cable from one of the other devices that works correctly.

Thanks - I've tried swapping things about

Thanks slipperybidness.

Indeed I've tried swapping cables - no luck. Any volume adjustment - including manual rather than remote - causes the same problem. I assume it's the HDMI link between the input device (Humax Foxsat PVR) and the amp that's causing the problem.

I've check the firmware version of PVR - it's as up to date as it can be.

If I plug the PVR directly into the TV - works fine. However volume adjustment then is of TV alone.

At the moment I've had to plug the PVR directly into the TV - and used an optic link from PVR to amp. It works fine but is a little fiddly in use and will cause confusion to other family members.

I find it odd that I can't find others with the same problem.

I think it's your Yamaha. Though not an identical problem, I recently had to do a "factory reset" of my Yamaha RX-A3010. Easy enough...it should be in your manual. (But it's not just unplugging and replugging it. You'll have to run YPAO and other personal setup preferences again afterwards.)

My volume indicator in the GUI got freaky and colorfully pixelated when connected to either my DirecTV DVR or my blu-ray player when I tried to change volume. And it wouldn't go away unless I hit the "Display" button several times. The reset took care of it.

Must be cosmic rays. ;) These oddball glitches drive people nuts.

Good luck with yours.

Will try reset...

Thanks for thoughts and comments. I did find it really irritating (you plug all the new kit together and... Some bits don't really seem to work grrrr). Anyway I will try a factory reset and see what results. I'm away at the moment but will give it a go when home.

Thanks again

I have the exact same issue. It only happens when I am watching Standard Definition channels from my cable box. Did you come across any solutions? I am thinking of switching to component cables for my Cable Box to see if the same issue exists. This is extremely annoying (I loose 3-5 seconds of picture and sound every time I adjust the volume. Hard to find anyone with the same issue - Glad I'm not the only one!

This sound like the volume is being changed on the Humax box rather than the receiver. The Humax on screen display for volume is at a different format than program content. So, when you change volume, the TV tries to process the on screen display format, thereby disputing the chain.

Can you try setting the on screen display for the Humax and Yamaha off, then use the Master Volume knob to adjust volume. If this does not disrupt the signal, it will confirm my suspicion.

Chris, my response above is applicable to your situation too. Try the idea and report back.

Can you try setting the on screen display for the [striKe]Humax [/strike] cable box and Yamaha off, then use the Master Volume knob to adjust volume. If this does not disrupt the signal, it will confirm my suspicion.

need help with the same issue...

just so you know, there are a few of us out there...
my yamaha 473 glitches out the image when changing the volume on standard definition programming on directv.

when attempting to change the volume with the knob or the remote, the image and audio disappear for about 3-5 seconds. it only happens with standard def programming and it only happens with that input.

my appletv and bluray work fine with no issues.

i have swapped out satellite boxes and hdmi cables. same problem persists.

it is quite annoying and frustrating. sorry that i don't have a solution yet, but i figured the more info out there the better.

good luck to those with this prob. i will report back if i find anything useful.

HDMI handshake issue

No solution, but at least this explains the problem with the video changeover...

look on avsforum and do a search for hdmi-handshake-issue.

This is a quote from someone on that site which makes sense to me:

I know this thread is a couple of months old but I have some information about this issue, though not a permanent solution. I have the same setup, though my receiver may be the 373, can't remember and can't check at this moment. The issue seems to be with the on screen display of the yamaha receiver which I think is displaying in HD while SD content is showing causing the switch. If you haven't already, you'll notice that if you bring up the yamaha menu's the same problem occurs as changing the volume, in other words as I said before, it seems to be with on screen display from the yamaha receiver. A partial fix that I've found is turn off the motorola dvr, hit the menu key and wait a few seconds and menu will come up that lets you change some of the dvr's video settings. Under this menu change the non-hd content setting to "Stretch", hit the menu key again to exit and power your motorola dvr back up and the problem should be gone. The problem now is the setting doesn't seem to stick, for example turning off your yamaha receiver will cause the motorola dvr to revert the settings through I guess some auto detection process, don't know. I saw another thread somewhere with a similar problem that looks like it may have been solved by switching from HDMI to component video, haven't tested this yet personally.

Found out why...

I was having the same problem - found the answer here and it's worked!

Make sure that your HDMI input sources are all set to output at least 480p.

For cable boxes it would be listed under Videos Settings/SD Override. For more info, contact your cable box provider.
Blu-Ray/DVD players it would be listed under Videos Settings/TV Settings/Type. For more info, contact your player's support line.

I have run into this problem on the RX-V473 and 480p was the CAUSE, not the solution. 480i would work fine but 480p caused the issue described. The best solution I have found is to set the cable box to always output 1080i whether it's showing HD or SD. That way the cable box does not switch resolutions between channels so that happens faster and the receiver GUI is happy.

I've had the same problem with both the 473 and now the 573...I was hoping it was a simple issue so I upgraded. After a few months of putting up with this problem, now when I go from a regular digital channel to an HD channel the screen goes blank and sometimes doesn't return at all until I've powered down the Yamaha and turned it back on. REALLY aggravating now. I love my system, but this is ridiculous. It also does it if I watch an on demand feature in HD and when it goes back to the menu after watching the screen goes blank again. Of course, the menu for on demand features is not in HD. Latest problem, sometimes when I'm just going back and forth from certain HD channels to another HD channel, same issue. Has anyone seen a viable solution? I have Comcast and can't set the output resolution with this box. Thinking of getting rid of Yamaha altogether...but $500 down the drain!

Hi Ho

Hi Ho

You can set the output resolution. Turn off the cable box then press menu. Depending on the type of Comcast box you have you will either see a menu with a white background and black text or one with a blue background and white text.

If you have the white menu set the output resolution to 1080i and the 4:3 override to OFF.

If you have the blue menu find the supported resolutions option and uncheck all but 1080i and 1080p.

This problem is only apparent on Yamaha receivers from the 573 and under. The 673 does not have this problem.

I know that I am responding to an old thread, BUT I found a solution as I was having the exact same issue, only mine was with my Samsung BD. I have the Yamaha RX-V473 also.

I noticed that the problem was only happening when I watched a standard DVD. It never happened while watching a Blu-ray disc. My Samsung Blu-ray disc player has an option to let you output everything at 1080 P. I did this, and now the issue is resolved.

I am pretty tech savvy, but I have to admit, I have no idea how this solved that problem. I am just glad that it is indeed Working correctly.

I have a Yamaha RV X473 receiver with a Cox Cable Motorola DVR and have the same issue when I adjust volume the picture disappears for about 30 seconds before coming back, but will disappear again any time a volume adjustment is made.

I read through this thread and tried going into the DVR main menu to "Video Output Formats". My video output was set to "1080i Wide Preserve 4:3 Pic - 480i"

I changed the setting for the "Auto Tune to HD" option from "off" to "on".

I am now able to make volume changes without losing visual. I turned all of my equipment off and restarted and the volume control still works. The ONLY problem that persists is that I do lose visual when I am watching a taped show from my DVR. All other live shows or On Demand Movies are okay.

I had the same issue all the time and it was making me nuts I realize that if I don't use the receiver remote and I use the remote for my television to adjust the volume it doesn't happen this is accurate for regular shows and taped shows. . So far I haven't had any more issues just by switching remotes
