Yamaha RX-A1020 right choice?

Hi all,

Been a while since I last posted to these forums. I am currently shopping for a new Receiver and have my sights set on the new Yamaha RX-A1020 model. I currently will be replacing my existing RX-v765 model and am looking forward to the increased power and additional functions of the new receiver, mostly network and airplay. My speaker set is all Klipsch as follows:
Center RC-52
Mains RF62
Surrounds RS42
Rear surrounds RB61
Sub Klipsch RW 10D

I know the sub is a little weak and may consider upgrading it in the near future but I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this new RX-A1020 yet and what your impressions are? I understand that Sirius etc, has been removed with the addition of airplay but have never had sattelite radio at all anyway. I have at ipod users and 2 iphone users in the house so the airplay sounds awesome. I am also planning on purchasing the (optional) WiFi adaptor (which in my opinion should be included for these prices but whatever).

Anyway, just looking for some impressions before i take the plunge.

I relaly like the 10xx series especially the 1010 from last year. You get an upgraded video processor from the 7 and 8 series, but still not the HQV Vida that is in the 20 & 30. Not a huge deal however, unless you are a videoholic. You also start getting multi-channel input's, which will be nice should you ever decide to add additional power, which you will not need with the Klipsh's. I say go ahead, you certainly will not regret it.

Best Buy is selling their Ax010(s) and switching to Ax020(s). I got another A2010 (have one) for $700 over the last weekend. $850 would have snagged the A3010.

If the A1020 was $1K, I'd rather get the A3010 for $850.

Might be worth looking. Just my $.02

OK, I made the plunge today and have been playing with this thing all day long so far (need to get some food.....seriously). Only thing is that I splurged for the 2020 model for the extra power and videeo processing, already installed the iphone AP (already in love with this) and have been streaming some net radio all over the house - put my roger waters dvd in and cranked up "set the controls for the heart of the sun live".....my old reciever would start clipping at about -1db while this reciever pushed my speakers to a nice crisp clear and loud db of +5 without any hesitation......all I can say is WOW!! more power testing to come

2020 and no Dolby Pro Logic IIz

I've been looking at getting this receiver as it has S-Video. I have a large collection of laser discs that would benifit from the upscalling. I currently have a Pioneer Elite SC-05 which I am happy with, but I am getting a new projector that does 3D so hence the upgrade. My previous receiver was Yam DSP 3090. I like both brands equally but am concerned that the yamaha doesn't decode Dolby Pro Logic IIz, or at least I can't find in the manual that it does which is causing me to lean more with the Pioneer SC67 which doesn't have S-Videio. With upcomming Blu-Rays to take advantage of the new decoding I am a little conflicted. Thanks for any adice or insight you can provide.

I guess the question is why do you think you need Pro Logic IIz and are you ever going to use it?

I am currently having my basement finished and have a theater being put in. I will be upgrading from 7.1 to 9.1/2 so I am just curious if this will be a factor for upcomming blu-rays, and I guess I should have clarified. I can't find if it will decode DTS Neo X. Thanks

I have to double check but a lot of my latest Blue Rays are still 5.1. There are few 71. out there as well but no 9.2 that's for sure.

Don't knock it till you've tried it. As long as you have the room for it (mine is 14x34x7) it's a whole new movie watching experience. My system is now a full blown 11.2 theater & it's staggering how emersed you are in the movie. Yamaha knows what their doing with their DSP programs & the front & rear height channels are simply amazing. I can see where it would be overkill if the room size is not accomidating up for all the speakers & it probably would hurt the sound. Although have you ever counted the number of speakers in a movie theater? It's a heck of a lot more than 5/7/9 or 11. Their soundtrack isn't any different than the BD we have at home.

You make a good point with room size. Your room is huge. Maybe in bigger rooms, one can hear the difference but for my little 12x10 room, I don't think it would worth it.

Room size definitely plays a key role in determining the entire setup. Luckily my room size is very accomidating. You have to play it by ear depending on what size room you are working with.

I have a bit of a similar question.

I too am wondering if this receiver is a good fit for the speakers I am buying.

I am buying the Klipsch Icon series from best buy, which consists of the kf-28's, their center channel, the 2 surrounds and the sw-450 subwoofer.
