My neighbor has been hinting around that he wants to put a surround sound system in his parlor. He emailed me last night with a link to a HTIB Onkyo system for $800 on amazon, and was wondering if buy 2 of them would be better than one, lol....
I explained to him the htib systems and separate components would be a much better choice...
He came over this morning for coffee and we put together an order, he wants something that can play music very well as well as watch movies, his room is about 300sq ft with 8ft ceilings, but it is pretty much closed off from the rest of the house with some large french doors...
Here is what he just ordered...

He liked the look of this receiver- Marantz SR5006 AV Receiver with Networking and AirPlay | Accessories4less

1 of these XPA-2 | 300W x 2 | Emotiva Audio | High-end audio components for audiophiles and videophiles, spanning 2-channel music systems, as well as 5.1 and 7.1 home theaters. Products include multichannel amplifiers, stereo amplifiers, and monoblock amplifier

2 of these subs Newegg.com - Klipsch Reference RW-12d 12" Powered Subwoofer Each w/ New box

2 sets of these for surrounds- Dayton Audio B652 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair 300-652

And for his front 3 he is going with
BOSTON ACOUSTICS VS336PF VS Series 3-Way 6-1/2 in Tower Speaker Cherry Ea | Accessories4less

BOSTON ACOUSTICS VS325C Center Channel Speaker Cherry | Accessories4less

So he spent around $3500 but I think he did pretty good, it took us almost 2 hours to get it all together.. His son is an electrician so he can handle running the wires, thats his wife main concern, she doesnt want to see wires...

Sounds like you're a pretty good neighbour. It's always nice sharing your passion with others as well :) Hope you at least get a 6 pack out of this, haha :)

The Boston speakers are really nice.

Did he really spend $1000, for a pair of Klipsch subs?

Subs were on sale for $299 each shipped {they only had so many at that price, looks like they ran out about 2 hours after he bought his 2, lucky} I recently got a chance to here them {well one of them} and they are really nice, I have to say best sub for $299 hand down, nothing in this price range can attempt to touch it... Out put amount is more than enough for a medium/ large room, clean, low, and pretty fast... plus its a nice smallish {not really small} sub, $299 shipped, Ill bet it would cost me $80 to ship that thing...

$600 for a pair of these subs is really impressive.. I think he got some good deals, even the Bostons for $1300 with a center for $400, they were originally $4200!!! The subs msrp's are $2000 and the avr is $800 or so... Granted msrp's are msrp's but a $7000+ system for $3500 is decent...

But anyway to answer your question, e paid $600 for 2 subs, I know the sale is only for the first so many customers but he only paid $299 each..
The add in the side bar on audioholics still says 299$ so if you call them they will probably honor it..

As far as the Boston speakers - yes the VS series are really nice.
The Boston speakers will need room, from the back and side walls.

As far as sub preference, that would be subjective.

That is still going to be a decent system, for your friend.

Were the Dayton speakers chosen because of budget?

Yah the Dayton's were because he didn't want to go over $3500, and other surrounds like 200se's and anything di/bi-pole costs around $300 a pair... For under $70 for 4 speakers the PE bookshelfs are awesome... I have a set my son uses in his room, they sound really good...

I used them as surrounds before and never noticed a difference in quality vs my 200se's!! Kind of would have rather saved the few hundred and used them, but I already own the 200's... I see people spend $1000 on surrounds, and never thought anything of it, now that I have been playing with this stuff, its not necessary to spend more than what the daytons cost... As far as dipole and bipole surrounds go, I tried 2 different sets for surrounds, and I preferred the 200 bookshelfs over them, I seemed to get a weird delay that seamed to bounce off the rear wall, they seemed much harder to place...
