Subsonic filter for SPL enclosure?

I was wondering this is just for learning purposes... If you had an enclosure for SPL that was tuned higher than a sq enclosure say about 40hz.... would it hurt the sub to set the subsonic filter as low as say 20hz? What would happen in this example?

I don't think there's a way to answer that without specifics. Pay close attention to what sort of excursion you're going to be trying to push as you get down to 20 Hz or so.

If this is a ported enclosure, then the subsonic filter needs to be at the cut off frequency, as the speaker decouples from that point with large useless cone excursion.

If you wanted higher SPL you would tune it the same and raise the subsonic filter to a higher cutoff point. ;)

By doing this you increase your SPL, and still have the proper tuning for your subwoofer system. Of course you do still need to watch the Voice Coil to insure it can take the extra power. If your overall goal is higher than 40hz SPL seal the sub.

The JL audio manual calls for a 1.35ft3 sealed enclsoure for the 12W7... will that perform well? It sounds a little small. Would it help to add some poly fill?

All sealed enclosures must be densely filled with a material like Polyfill. It needs to be densely filled without compression.
