Replacement Driver for eD A5-350

Hey all,

I could really use some help here, as one of my drivers is no good and I cant seem to find any 16ov.2 Dual 2 Ohms for sale anywhere since eD went under

Is there any suitable replacement I could get that would be similar, and hopefully not too expensive.

I have 2 of these stacked in my room if that makes any difference.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

Try looking on some car audio forums, there are still some eD subs for sale sometimes. Or partsexpress should have some suitable 15" subs that you can use as a drop in replacement.

I did find one that was posted in 2009 lol sent the guy an email in a long shot, you just never know.

I was looking at those on parts express, i just dont know enough about this stuff.

But with the A5-350 being ported I dont want to spend $200 on a driver, drop it in and it sounds absolutely horrible.

I guess i could always seal up the cabinet as another option.

That one states the ts parameters are best suited for sealed applications, this one says it's good for sealed or vented, so it would be a better choice.

Or you could go with the Titanic 15" driver

Looking at those two you listed I'm thinking ill get the Titanic and see how that goes.

Is there anything I need to take into consideration with the current size of the ports/port tubes or is it just a trial and error sort of thing, if ported doesn't work seal it up and see how that goes I guess

Now for a silly question, do you think it would be worth getting two to keep both subs the same.....or i have too much time on my hands at work to think about this

I'd just start with one and see how you like the sound.

Yeah that would be the smart thing to do i guess. I'll keep my eye on some forums and see if I can find a 16ov.2 first for a bit, but if not it's good to know I got some options to try.

You may want to try pierce audio. If you give Paul all your box information (volume, port type, port length, bracing volume, etc) he could probably build you a driver to work in that box for a couple hundred bucks.

I will keep them in mind for sure. I think I might try to fix the sub first as I have nothing to lose really.

Probably not too good. Replacing a custom driver with an off-the-shelf one isn't quite that easy I'm afraid, especially if you want it to match an identical unit. In essence what you're doing is akin to flipping a coin, and it would be more by luck then science. That doesn't often end well.

I don't imagine you'll be able to sufficiently match the TS params between disparate drivers and make the two subwoofers blend seamlessly, which I suspect would turn out to be a big problem for you. What about the amp? eD more then likely tuned it's DSP to provide a specific measured response. Will a totally different driver react to that boost/cut algorithm in the same manner? It's doubtful. I suspect you'll end up more frustrated then successful.

The suggestion about Pierce Audio is a very good one. Paul would probably need your working driver to model a new one, but he might be able to make a real close copy. It won't be the cheapest route to take, but it's perhaps the one with the greatest probability of success.

Reverse engineering an enclosure is next to impossible. You need identical TS parameters. The dimensions of the box and port have to match the T/S parameters of the driver, very precisely, there is practically no wiggle room or the sub will not work.

Your options, are to buy a woofer tested and measure the TS parameters of the good driver, and search through piles of sepc. sheets and see of you can get a driver acceptably close.

Your next option is to seal both cabinets and model a driver that will give acceptable results in an enclosure of that volume. There is much more wiggle room with sealed alignments.

Your third option is replace your subs and your best option is to build them rather than but one.

I would not worry that there is Eq in the amp, as you can't Eq a ported enclosure. A sealed enclosure generally does require equalization for optimal results.

Your plan of just ordering a drop in replacement driver, will not work and be a waste of money.
