Fed Ex sucks. I was a shipping and receiving clerk for a major retailer for 8 years, and remember when that company was the best at what they did. Then the attitude of the company changed somewhere in the mid 90's.

I have had speakers that I've shipped out come back looking like someone had left them in the large primate cage at he zoo for the time they were away from me. Impact from the drops they took had acually separated the magnets from the baskets. When I pulled the drivers out the magnets were lying in the bottoms of the cabinets. The edges of those same cabinets were rounded from being rolled repeatedly. They looked like they fell out of the back of the truck while it was driving.

Then the ******** welched out on the insurance claim.

I ship with UPS now almost exclusively, though I've had similar problems, they've never screwed me on a claim.

Well, I received my replacement sub today. I've got it all hooked up and running. It looks like I need to spend some time figuring out placement and settings to get the best out of it. How should I break this bad boy in, and for how long?

Did it arrive in good shape? Sounds like it did - if so, that's awesome!

I've never done anything to break in a sub except use it, but I'm curious what others think.

I've heard of guys playing tones or sweeps to break the subwoofer in, but never really thought it made a difference. I tried it, but it didn't seem to do anything different than what I usually do, which is to just use it regularly for music for a few days or up to a week depending on how much listening I'm doing. I also don't crank it until I've had used it for that first week. After that its every subwoofer itself :D

I suspect that the amount of time I use it before I let loose is overkill since I can be sitting in front of the computer doing work for hours with constant music playing, but I figure it can't hurt either.

If your sub sounds good, use it and enjoy it. If it doesn't, just having it play stuff for awhile isn't going to make it sound substantially better. The idea of breaking a sub in is... problematic.

As an aside, I'd love to read a the story about how some audiophile decided to break his subs or speakers in by having them play loud tones for awhile and then melting the voice coils.

If that was directed at what I said, I'll say that there are some assumptions in there.

So before I say anything I'll ask if that was directed at me.

Yes, it arrived in good shape. I made sure the Fedex guy stuck around till I opened it to be sure this time. I would like to corner load the sub, but I don't really have a corner in this room. The closest thing I have is my fireplace which is on a 45 degree wall followed by another 45 degree wall.

Read up on a couple of these articles. The corners are not always the best location for a sub.

As far as break in, just put in a couple bass heavy movies or music and enjoy.

Well, I have had my Rumba for a couple days now, and I am very impressed. I have a huge room, and when combined with my MTX SW1212, it really fills the room. The MTX has quite a bit of upper and mid bass, but completely lacks the really low stuff, that's where the Rumba kicks in. The two together really compliment each other well. The do a really nice job of pressurizing the room. For the first time I can say that I could feel the bass. I am definitely going to buy another one as soon as I can afford it. You know what they say, two is better than one.

Me thinks your subwoofers have gone through enough "breaking" in. Also, it's pointless, just play and enjoy.

It's official, someone actually bought a MTX home sub.

Now to delve into why....

I have fallen in love with my movies all over again. I'm rewatching TRON: LEGACY, and all I can say is WOW!!!. I love this sub. I can't wait to get another.
