Best Subwoofer for Klipsch Quintets?

Hello,

I was hoping to get some opinions on what Sub I should buy for my 2 sets of klipsch quintets Connected to a pioneer vsx-1021-k. I've had the set up for about 6 months now using a cheap 100 dollar sony sub that i've had for a long time. that sub is just not cutting it anymore. So i need your help to find a sub that's good up to 200hz. i have the crossover currently set to 150hz for the sub (the q's go down to 120hz, but my receiver will on allow 80hz,100, 150 & 200 as crossover options). I want a sub thats punchy, tight, and can really handle the job. my budget is 500 or less. what do you suggest?

Just saw the jamo sub 650 on amazon in black for 299.00! Looks like a great deal.
Cheers, Mac

Can't recall if anyone posted a frequency response of the Jamo but that does look like a great deal. With free shipping if you can swing the extra $100 and fit it in the room, get 2. I think Archaea over at avs tried these subs and liked them.

Other choices at no more than 500....

HSU VTF-1. 495 shipped and HSU's generally extend quite well

Epik legend at 499, not sure re shipping

The Legend I think is the best choice if you can't do the 2 Jamo subs...

Room size is only 12 x 15. I listen to a lot of music, so i would prefer the sub to excel at that.

I read somewhere that the legends run too hot. To the point where replacement parts were sent to the consumer. Like I said earlier 2 Jamo would do the job.

Interesting, didn't know that about the Legend. Been pretty quiet on the Epik front of late.

Would it be ok to connect 2 jamo's to a 7.1 receiver? Only one sub preout...Would one of them be enough? I do like the sub..and for 299, hard to pass up.

Also, The jamo doesn't go to 200hz (150 max) and I wanted the option to set crossover to 150, or 200hz. Is that important? I would probably leave it on 150hz, but would like the option, and to see which sounds better to me. Any other 200hz sub suggestions?

I also like the Klipsch RW12D, but that only goes up to 120hz...if my crossover is 150, won't there be a gap?

You definitely can connect two subs to a receiver with only one sub preout. You just need to use an inexpensive splitter like this one (shown below). You can get them at a number of places.

As for the frequency response, I'll take a look. The Jamo sub page states 150, but the manual states 200 Hz as the upper end of the range. I'll see if I can find some measurements.

Thanks for looking into it for me.

I noticed this Jamo 800, clearly 200hz. Any thoughts? I like the sleek look also (im a little weird about stuff matching)

Jamo SUB 800 800 Watt 6.5" Subwoofer in Black NEW!!!! | eBay
My thoughts are - it's darn nice looking, and it fits your desire to get up to 200 Hz. It doesn't, however, play as low as the others. It's only rated down to 42 Hz. On another note (and sorry if I missed it here already), I don't know what the Jamo rating is supposed to mean - it doesn't state +/- X dB, so it might not be very flat to either end of that rating.

Just how important to you is that 200 Hz upper end? If your speakers are rated down to 120 Hz, I think the 150 Hz crossover is a good compromise given your receiver's setting options.

I understand what you guys are saying, while i have the desire to go to 200hz, sacrificing low end is not worth it. ideally i would like something that can do 24 (or lower) - 200hz. the 200 i just feel gives me more wiggle room to play with...heck this pos sony has a 28-200 range...i just feel its too muddy sounding, and want an upgrade i''m really going to notice. if the jamo 650 can really do 200hz, ill buy today..if you all feel its the best option performance wise.

For the price and performance you can't do better. Did you read his review I posted? Maybe you can PM/Email Archaea.

I PM'd Archaea to see if he can drop by and let you know his thoughts. Here was his response via PM though (asked him if he measured it beyond 100Hz) ...

I don't think I did. But I can check that out for you pretty easily. I'l post something by end of weekend in the Jamo omnimic thread. I'll just do a close mic test so we can be assured of accurate results regardless of my room. I'd do it right now, but the family is getting ready to head out for the day.

I'm listening to the Jamo right now and I'll tell you it's definately worth $300 bucks. It's a steal at that price for most people. It's even a good option for us true enthusiasts for use in a secondary system because it doesn't sacrifice anything at all down to 20hz. Much better than the typical ported 30hz budget subs typically found in this price range. Though at this point can you even buy it? Vanns is out, World Wide Stereo is out. It may be gone except ebay ($380ish now) or the used market or the sellers who still want near MSRP for it. (which at MSRP it is NOT a good deal).
Sounds like a pretty good sub at $299!
