Hello,

I am looking for a subwoofer for my living room. Would like to keep the cost under $1600 or so, and would like to buy in Canada if possible. We want it mostly to watch movies. I am using Paradigm Monitor speakers right now without subwoofer.

Because it is in my living room, I would also like it to look good and it can't really be that large. No more than say 18" in any dimension.

Is the Paradigm UltraCube a good option? I like it because it matches my speaker line!

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

I don't know anything about the Paradigm, but I'd like to throw in the SVS SB13-Ultra for your consideration. They just announced it this week for preorder at $1499 in the U.S. (don't know about Canada, though), and there are three user reviews of it (including mine) that were posted this week. The link to all three reviews is here, and the link to SVS's page on it is here.

If the price to Canada is close to that of the U.S., then it matches what you said you want. I have been very impressed by the performance and build quality of it. With the metal grille on, the depth is about 20", but it's under 18" with the grille off. All other dimensions are under 18". It's an outstanding sub for that size, IMO. It performs as well in my home and my listening habits as my larger PC13-Ultra.

Funk Audio (btw: Canadian company) said they will offer less expensive models in a few coming weeks. Given their specialty - sealed subs (which are typically smaller) finding one would not too hard...

Call and ask them about their upcoming subs (SB13-Ultra is another good choice)

Thanks for the links. The Svs subwoofer looks real nice! Will also look at FunkAudio.

Who sells Svs in Canada?

Hey, sonicboomaudio.com is SVS's CDN distributor. If you email them, tell Mason "Steve" sent you. ;)

Nathan at FunkAudio is also a great choice and based in BC (depending where you are?), I think for $1500 you can likely get something really cool. I'm not sure when his new subs are coming out...

Agreed on the Funk Audio suggestions. I've heard nothing but good things about them, and those custom-finished curved enclosures are sexy, sexy. The fact that the cabinet, driver, and amp are made in Canada might be a big selling point for the OP. I know that I like to buy American when I can - "home town" pride and all. :)

I will have to look into the Funk Audio options. Anyone review his subs yet? Can't find anything on ecoustics about "Funk Audio"?

Some of the members here own those subs and hopefully see this thread and chip in. You might also find some useful information in the somewhat long thread linked here.

Another option is the XS15 from Powersoundaudio.com. Not as pretty as the SB13 or Funk options though. And not sure if they ship to Canada or not? But they look to have great performance to dollar ratios...

The Funk-18 looks kind of like the KEF-209.

Yeah, if I could go back in time, I would not buy any other subs except the Funk subs. Absolutely incredible subs.

Leaning towards the ULS-15 now. Seems like a good price for what you get.

Great reviews of the Svs guys!
