Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire II Tablets Coming In July

Details are still scarce about the Kindle II but Rumors are that it might have grown to 8.9" or 10" or both.

The 7" Google Nexus looks like an awesome gaming and entertainment tablet but it also looks like it might be locked into Google Play the same way that the current Kindle Fire is locked into Amazon's Marketplace but I've also read that the Kindle reader client from Google Play works well on 7" tablets. Also missing is a memory expansion slot. But a high performance quad-core gaming tablet with GPS and Bluetooth for $200-250 (8 or 16GB) is a steal. :D

Saw that. I want the Nexus 7 myself. 199 is pretty good.

Performance of Nexus 7 was compared to $500 Asus xformer prime and the differences was neglectable ...
I'm only worried about lack of storage - Cloud only media consumption ... hmmm - I hope it'll support dlna and or network shares ;-) etc...

The non-expandable storage is the sucky part. I'm also hoping that the home screen can be replaced with a clock/calendar/weather app but having just bought a new phone I'm in wait and see mode for a few months.

No HDMI out either on the 7:

I'm not a cloud user so don't know much about it. Can you store movies or music there and play it on the 7?
Google gives a bit of space away and sells you more just like Amazon. They want you to buy videos and view them from your device and buy music and play them from your Android. Amazon has had that for a while which is probably why the fire had so little storage.

I caved and ordered one, will report back whenever google decides to send it my way. I intend to use it almost exclusively to browse the internet and use as a remote for my HTPC, and maybe, if i decide to give the harmony link a try, my whole setup.

The lack of HDMI isn't really an issue for me as any receiver I have with HDMI inputs has an HTPC plugged in, but I would like optical for my bookshelf system....and I mean that's a pretty common feature on tablets right? :D

Lets us know how you like it. I'm going to pick up another tablet when I come home in November. My three year old claimed my Samsung Galaxy Tab as hers so I didn't bring it with me.

Got my nexus 7 Friday and been playing with it a bit. The first thing I noticed is that it is FAST. Opening apps, going back to the homescreen, switching between tasks happens instantaneously.

The screen is very good overall, but is far to reflective. I've found the reflectivness somewhat annoying in my house, I imagine the tablet is useless outside.

The built in speaker is..... not terribly good, and the audio out is barely acceptable. I am somewhat disappointed by this, especially with XBMC coming to android soon. (Running a dev preview right now, seems to work fairly well already)

The fit and finish is AMAZING for the price range or even for more expensive items. It feels nice and solid, no complaints at all.

Overall I am very pleased with my purchase, the device is well worth the $200, what's yet to be seen is if it actually proves useful to me.

Better Late Than Later...

A few weeks late but based on today's Amazon blowout of Kindle accessories and the 10" Kindle Gizmodo is predicting that next week is the week Amazon will announce new models. I'm ready for a new Kindle but only time will tell if next week is the week and if the new models are all that exciting.

$110 Says All the New Kindles Are Coming Next Week
When bargain hounds opened their Amazon Deal of the Day email this morning, they were met with a bargain basement Kindle DX. Amazon's black sheep 10-inch e-ink tablet is $110 off today, a 29% discount. It's the kind of deal you offer when you want to clear out inventory, fast.

The DX isn't competitive in an iPad world. It never has been. But you know what would be? A 10-inch Kindle Fire. You know, like the one that's been rumored for months.

Consider the context: The DX has long been neglected, ignored even, by Amazon. And rightly so. First introduced in 2009, the DX has gotten a single, largely meaningless update since. It's received no promotional support, despite Amazon's obviously healthy marketing budget. Any relevance it had was severely hampered by the introduction of the iPad, and was obliterated when Apple decided to get into the textbook business.

So clearly Amazon's trying to unload a product it doesn't want to support any more. In fact, it hasn't supported the DX in two years. So why clear them out now? Because all those 10-inch Kindle DX boxes are taking up valuable shelf space, especially when there are 10-inch LCD models coming in to replace it.

And it's not just the DX. Every single Lightning Deal today is Kindle-related: cases, speaker docks, sleeves. Sixteen deals in all, a waterfall of discounts. It's a fire sale, if you'll pardon the pun. All of those accessories will presumably still be compatible with an updated 7-inch Kindle Fire, sure. But Amazon won't need nearly as many of them if its market is split between two sizes.

Amazon put on their dog and pony show today and announced a monochrome paper white Kindle reader for $120 (wifi only) and $170 for 3G - those are the ad supported prices. Add $20-30 for ad-free versions. The Kindle Fire gets an upgrade and drops to $150. A new 16GB high-res Kindle HD takes the $199 slot. A new high resolution 8.9" Kindle Fire HD will start at $299 for the 16GB wifi-only model. There's also a GB 4G version with a weird and wildly impractical (250MB/mo for $50/YEAR) data plan for $500 plus data that almost assures overage charges for anything beyond pulling own email. Not announced is a $370 32GB wifi-only 8.9" with a late November delivery date and is the one I think I want. Note that the Fire HD are ad supported :(.

FWIW they include front facing cams and Bluetooth (a must) and Dolby stereo sound and a ton of new parental control and ebook and audiobook place sync sync features. The bottom of the line ad supported Kindle drops to $69 though. With the fires you can create an account for each kid and assign maximum application (games) and video usage times per day for each kid and still leave unlimited reading time if you like.

I didn't get to attend so you'll have to read the reports for details.

BTW I'd be shocked if Google doesn't drop the price of the 16GB Nexus 7 to $200 and add a ~$275 32GB model.

I talked to my brother tonight, and he was really excited about these announcements. I'm interested to see how these perform against the iPad. I love the screen on my new iPad, but the lack of flash and the $500 price tag are downsides.

I'm not sure about Flash on the Amazon Fire HD but Google is removing Flash from their Nexus 7 and the only way to get it back is through side-loading or running Firefox.

I'm still on the fence about the Fire HD because $370 for the one I want is a lot of money. But I do know that I do want the $140 ad-free paper-white ereader. I've been reading my Kindle a lot lately and the unlit off white display has always bugged me enough that I don't use it as much as I'd like. I've never used the 3G on my Kindle and don't see a reason to spend the extra money again.
