Dolby and dts question

And here goes another probable stupid question, I was busy looking at different specs on the Denon AVR 3313 and the 2113 and came across some dolby and dts comparability and i noticed that the 3313 had a lot more then the 2113, well what i want to know is how important are those extra sound formats.

the 3313 has:

Dolby TrueHD;
Dolby Digital Plus;
Dolby Digital-Decoder;
Dolby Digital EX;
Dolby Pro Logic II;
Dolby Pro Logic IIx;
Dolby Pro Logic II;

and some DTS ones as well.

the 2113 has:
Dolby TrueHD;
Dolby Pro Logic II;
Dolby Pro Logic IIx;
Dolby Pro Logic II;

and some DTS ones as well, but still missing compared to the 3313

so again, how important are those missing dolbys ??

IMO, I only care for the TrueHD and the DTS equivalent, and the Dolby digital or DTS equivalent.

well the 2113 doesn't have the digital, is that a big "fail" on it's side for not having that? what about the prologic??

I'm guessing you only use one at a time? Does the av usually pick automatically?

First, be careful with viewing specs on a manufacturer's website as there are often errors. I've read the manual for the 2113 as it is likely the next receiver I will buy (instead of my usual Onkyo) and it is more accurate than the specs on the website.

If the receiver supports Dolby TrueHD then it will also support the original Dolby Digital. It has to - DD is a mandated format for DVD.

Each disc has a 'default' format which the player will choose automatically if you don't go into the disc menu and select another format. The receiver will recognize the format and choose the decoder for that format.

ProLogic II and ProLogic IIx are for taking any 2 channel format and expanding it to 5.1 (II) or 6.1 or 7.1 (IIx). PLL IIx can also take 5.1 or 6.1 and matrix it into 7.1.

Yeah, the only things I care about are DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD.

Dolby Digital Plus might be nice if you stream Netflix (which I do). For most things, I'm guessing that it's no different than Dolby Digital - but DD Plus has the capability to expand to 7.1.

So suppose in my case (i'm planning on getting this within the next few months) I buy an av that will be playing a lot of content from my computer, it'll be connect via optical cable and i select the option on the ac3 config list to use spdif (from my understanding it will just send the sound without decoding anything leaving it to the av to decode), what happens if i play a movie that doesn't have a supported format by the av?? i guess no sound at all but will there be a way to get around this?

Playing audio from a computer you can always have the software decode the audio and send it to the receiver as strait PCM, but if you're playing AC3 (Dolby digital) every receiver will support it.
