I think I found the problem.

Cali, is this your car?

I dunno what you are talking about. Drivers in Texas are crazy. If you followed the posted speed limit, you'd get run over.
Yeah they are always on their cell phones too. So it's like dodging madmen. I'm just glad my car can take those fast corners.

That said I think people misread my post. Most places operate at 5 to 10 above the limit in my experience, but maybe where he's at people actually stick to the posted limit.

What kills me about driving in texas is...

...those mile high oerpasses. What, do they expect a Carnival cruise ship to go under them? I get nosebleeds when we go from Austin to Gainesville. Now they are putting them in by 45, whenever they get those open.

I was in Manila, and Angeles City, albiet 40 years ago. Unless things have changed, they weren't rules but more like suggestions.

...do they still have jeepneys? I loved those things!

Yeah, I hate how high the overpasses are. The walls don't seem high enough to stop you from flipping over them either :/

I don't feel entitled here in Arizona. You and I will get along fine...as long as you stay the **** off my roads.

:p

The hell I will. A couple of years ago we had some huge fun on I-10 over the New Year holiday. We rented a Corvette convertible from Hertz at PHX (they gave us a brand new one... it had only three miles on it when we picked it up), and the speed limit on I-10 was 85mph. The Corvette has exceptional acceleration when you floor it at about 55mph and don't let up until 90mph or so. Not being from the area I was still timid, but pick-up trucks with AZ plates were passing me at 90mph. Also, the damned thing was bright yellow, which made me think there was a trooper watching my every move.

Absolutely. AZ is the state we wished we lived in, but it just isn't practical at this time.

It really is a nice place. Tucson, or at least my "suburb", is quite a bit more populated and built up than it was when I moved here 16 years ago - but it's still nice. I imagine that the Phoenix area has more to do, but I prefer a small town atmosphere. It's not quite the same anymore, but one thing that really shocked me when I moved here was just how much of small town atmosphere Tucson had - and it was somewhere between 500k and 750k at the time. It helps a lot that it's so spread out and not built up with people living on top of each other. The price to pay is a longer commute, but I can live with that.

I have to say that my commute has gotten a lot less stressful now that I drive a family sedan and not a sports coupe. Now, I just cruise along and listen to audio books. Sure, people still irritate me when they do douchey things on the road, but I'm not in as big of a hurry. Plus, when someone wants me to go faster, I just think "dude, I'm driving a hybrid sedan...go around." :D

North Americans as a whole cannot drive worth a dam IHO. Rules seldom get followed and there is as a whole, a lack of basic understanding of traffic flow/dynamics. I spent one month touring Germany and there is a nation who understands what driving is. Its as close to heaven as a driver can get without crossing over to the other side. :D I found similar good driving behaviour in Belgium as well.

I've got one for you guys.

Me and the woman were driving through MD on our way to NJ on a Saturday. There is a Hyundai SUV in the left lane going about 70. Cool, no problem.

Some a-hole in a big pickup tailgates me, to which I don't respond. He then whips one lane over, and passes me. I see he is towing an unloaded trailer.

As he passes the Hyundai, he rolls down his window, sticks his head and arm out the window, and does what douchebags do.

About 3 seconds later, he swerves into the lane (by accident probably because he was too busy being a jerk to control his vehicle). He whips back into the lane... but it's too late. The trailer swings out, clips the Hyundai and smashes the front end.

I check my rear to make sure no one is there and slam my brakes. The Hyundai driver pulls over.

I pull up in front of him quite a ways. I see that the pickup driver pulled over about 1/4 mile ahead. I told the woman to keep an eye on him in case he tried to flee and run to the Hyundai. I check on the driver and his wife, very nice older couple. Their front passenger side was smashed, the tire was busted, and the rim was damaged.

I run back to my car and the pickup driver is walking back. I tell the Hyundai driver not to worry because I saw the whole thing and I was staying with them until they were ok and on their way home. I called the cops.

When the pickup driver gets to us, he gets loud and irate with the other driver, saying "You have no right to be driving so slow in the left lane." Now, I was calm up to this point, but I let him have it. Told him "STFU you a-hole, you could have killed all of us! Who the hell do you think you are telling people how fast they should be driving! He was already speeding, you were just being a a-hole! Take responsibility for WTF you did and STFU!"

So he tried to get angry with the driver again, to which I repeated with emphasis "S T F U AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY."

So the cops arrived and he did. I proceeded to help the other guy get the tire off his car, till the highway patrol showed up and asked me to stop because I could get hit from the traffic.

I almost did, all the running and anger and work on the car got me a lil dizzy when I shot up from the ground and I almost fell backwards into the left lane of traffic. The trooper almost caught me from falling but I balanced myself in time.

I get back to the car and the woman says "Babe what happened, I was mostly asleep." Told her "Nothin babe, go back to sleep if you want." So when she asked me later and told me she heard me yelling, I told her what happened. She said "That's why you're the best, that's why I love you."

The guys I work with in Pennsylvania warned me about Maryland drivers. On my way back to the airport in Baltimore, I had to agree with them.

I agree with some places you go the speed limit and you'll get run over. Like the tollway around Chicago. Hell, I passed a Ferrari on the tollway once while I was driving the company 4-cylinder Jeep just cause he was doing the speed limit. Ferrari should take the car away from him for driving the speed limit on the tollway!

In SE Wisconsin, we get a lot of FID's (Farking Illinois Drivers). I will do 5 mpg over on I-94 from the border up to Milwaukee. The FID's will tailgate wanting to go faster and that's when I'm not even in the left lane. Seriously, I won't go more than 5 over on that stretch because the state troopers patrol it every day and they always have someone pulled over, usually with Illinois plates. :D

I travel a lot for work. Texas, I have no problems with. They do 5 over or more. I'm cool with the flow of traffic. Bay area of California...I try to stay off the freeway but a lot of people usually are doing 30-35 mph in the 45 zone I usually drive. WTF? Regina, Canada...anything goes up there it seems. Toronto...I stick to side streets or let a local drive when I go downtown. Indiana...WTF is with people doing 55-60 in the left lane of the 70 mph zone on I-65!!!???? You are going to get yourself or someone killed! The government really needs to punch I-65 out to 3 lanes. It's way overcrowded now.

Sigh...Still, it's all better than what I experienced in China. They provided a driver and I just looked out the side window. I just didn't want to see what was going to kill us.

Had great experience driving in Belgium. Italy...not the best drivers...by a wide margin.

It's not just in Washington that people drive that way. Many people just don't get it. It seems that they think that they are going 'fast enough' and everyone else should just stay behind them. I don't get upset with them anymore though. There's no sense in that. My anger will not change their habits. If someone won't move over, I'll go around them, but cautiously. I did once have a guy finally move to the right as I went around him to the right. And guess who is in the wrong there. Yup, me. Passing on the right is against the rules.

As much as these people are aggravating, they don't scare me nearly as much as all the people texting on the highways. I was doing my usual 75mph in a 65 zone this morning when a woman flew past me doing at least 90. She started swerving side to side and slowed down to 60. At least she slowed down, but as I went past her, I saw her looking down at her phone and hitting buttons. I glanced back at her a couple of times to see her go off the road and then back across 2 lanes to the other shoulder. At that point I wondered if having her behind me was a bad idea.

Mark, did I ever tell you about the time we were hit by a jeepney? It was strange to see two drivers laugh at it, exchange no information, and then go their separate ways with a smile.

Just last night driving home I was in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway at about 10pm. I'm going about 70, (gas is $4.30 a gallon here ) when this douche in a 1 series BMW tailgates me for a while and then flashes his brights at me!!!! What the hell? I'm in the middle lane you jackass, the fast lane's to your left. So I brake-checked the hell out of the guy and he stayed behind me the rest of the way. Tool.
