I think its time to upgrade

Well now that I have a kick *** receiver, I think its time I get some speakers to match! Not that there is anything specifically wrong with my current Cantons, its just time to see what else is around.

I guess we will start with the budget first, which is $2000. Ideally I would like to get two front towers and a matching center for this much. We know how budgets go though, they have some stretch to them :)

I have always been intrigued by Aperion audio, and the new(er) Versus series look stunning! As you will quickly see, the Forte speakers fall nicely in my budget, while the Grand's are stretching it. I guess my question is would the Forte's be worth it to me? They seem very similar (on paper) to my Canton's but I know that is only part of the story. The Grands seem SO nice, and look absolutely amazing, but is it worth me spending the cash?

EMP is another company I have always looked at from afar. Quickly looking at the site I think I would be in the E55Ti towers, with E56Ci center to match. Again, beautiful looking speakers, and I know they have a good reputation.

That's about all I have looked at so far, and Id like to hear some other options. I mainly use my system for movies, and TV. Currently I do not have a sub or surrounds. We are living in a smaller apartment for about another year, then buying a house. So no sub in an apartment, and the surrounds would be a pain to mount and run wire too so I skipped them for now. When we get a house I would get the matching surrounds to whatever speakers I end up with, as well as a massive sub or two :) You can look in my signature to see my current equipment list. I am not 100% positive that I am looking to purchase immediately, but should be somewhat soon.

Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks,
Sean

If I were you (and trust me I was without sub for several years) - I'd get great sub first before anything else - you'd be shocked how better your mains will sound once you properly crossover sub 80hz frequencies to sub

2k can get you A lot of sub - XV30 or Pair of XV15/XS15.. SVS PB12-Plus, HSU VTF-15H or Funk Audio 18.0 :)

I have had (have) subs, and know the importance. However it really is not feasible in our apartment. I would probably still get an SVS Ultra, but the wife is really killin' the vibe :)

Wifes don't like large boxes.. then a sealed sub with nice finish - just tell your WAF it's new end table :) - Not ideal, but much better than no sub at all...

Your statements are a little confusing - You want to upgrade, and at
the same time you are not positive.

A lot of people like the Canton sound. You need to be sure that you are
really spending for a good upgrade.

If you want to play and test some speakers out >> then buy from a place
with a return policy, and buy a pair of their bookshelf speakers, to test and
get a good sample of their sound and performace. Then go from there and
see what you would like to do.

Also check into the likes of the Monitor Audio Silver series, Focal Chorus,
KEF Q series, NHT and PSB Image series.

Sorry for the confusion, let me clarify. I am positive that I am going to upgrade my speakers, I am not positive I will do it before I move. I want to at least start looking and researching now though.

I fully understand the sub argument, but its just not gonna happen. She is all for getting whatever once we have a house and can actually use it. The way our apartment is laid out, there is no good location for one plus I don't want to piss off the neighbors. On top of that I would rather not force the issue and get a SVS SB12 which would work in the apartment, then have to convince her AGAIN to get a larger sub when we get a house.

I will start checking out some of the recommendations that have been made already, thanks! Keep em coming!!

Sean, If you plan to move to new house soon - My suggestion is to Freeze all HT purchases for now
You don't know how they would or would not fit in new space...
And of course Sub shopping at this point is pointless.

I'd wait also and keep saving... $2000 dollars might not get you a significant upgrade unless you don't like the presentation of your Cantons.

If you want something new buy yourself a great pair of headphones if you don't have a pair.
