Opinion on my Setup

Hello Everyone

First time here...

Been researching the world of Audiophile Music and I probably will not get close to real Audiophile Utopia but wanted to get your opinion on what I do have and if I am at least on the right track.

So recently, I picked up a Denon Avr 5700 which I want to use for strictly music purposes, as I already have a Yamaha Aventage rx-a1000 for movies.

Also picked up a pair of Polk Audio Tsi-300's for my stereo music.

Currently using a Sony Bluray player for CD Transport.

Planned upgrades:

1) Pro-ject Debut Carbon or Denon Dp-f300 a proper cartidge
2) Some type of Universal Bluray Player - Maybe the Oppo because I also want SACD and DVD-A capability


With what I have, I do enjoy listening to CD's and am hoping with a universal player, that will give me better sound.

I also have a older Sony Double Cassette Player, just recently started to listening to my old tapes again. I know they will not produce great sound, but still nice to listen to old tapes.

Well that's what I have so far.

Please give me your suggestions and opinions and advice.

If you like the Polk speakers, that is great, but personally, from what little I have heard from them, I did not like the Tsi treble. If I were you I would ditch the speakers and get some bookshelf speakers with a subwoofer. Some respectable bookshelf speaker brands are Ascend, KEF, Behringer Truth Monitors. For good subs, check out Hsu, Rythmik, and Outlaw.

I think that I would ask for an opinion before you buy.
However, I agree with post #2 > I am not a big fan of
the Polk Tsi/Monitor series. I would choose Pioneer, or
Boston, or Infinity over them. However, enjoy and have
some fun with your gear.

Man, I wish I would have read this a few months ago ... I had a mint old Harman Kardon DC5300 dual tape deck I just threw away becasue I thought no one would want it . They were getting zero bids on EBay with listings for just 20 bucks.

Many Sony bluray players play SACD but require a receiver with that decodes DSD over HDMI.... Such as your Yamaha. No Sony players support dvd-a though.

I rejoiced at the end of the cassette tape era. I don't have a player anymore, but I kept 2 tapes that I just couldn't toss, both punk-rock albums. One was my friends band's studio album out of Houston in the 90s, prob a few hundred ever made. The other is "Have another beer with Fear", never released on vinyl and just about impossible to find on cd. If you do find it, it commands about $50 used!

You can digitize those now ... I think that technology exists .

I got the Polk because a Best Buy near me was closing down and they had them for half off.....and the Denon I got from ebay for a decent price....I am always looking for good deals on good equipment....

Even though the Denon 5700 is older I figured it was top of the line once and still pretty solid and thought it would be good for a music setup since it has plentymof power good quality and plenty of inputs...

For a turntable, I think I am leaning towards the Denon DP-F300 with Ortofon 2M Red....I was debating back and forth between that and a Project Debut Carbon...but I think I would like convenience of the Denon being automatic....

Any opinions on the Denon? Seems to get good reviews..

Also anybody ever hear or try the Nad C 556 turntable? I cant find any reviews or prices...

My experience with late 90's NAD products was not good. I had a CD transpoer AND a tape deck go bad within about a year of use. I have not looked to them from components since. Too bad because their designs and overall product look are so audiophile quirky too .

I am definately open to suggestions.....although for right now I will probably use the Polk....budget being the biggest thing....

I mght just be able to get a TT soon and then that is for a little while....

You guys think using the Denon avr is ok?

Projects always come with good recs and good reviews, but no personal experience.

You really can't go wrong with a Technics 1200, but you will want to look for a used one as they don't make new ones anymore and so a new one now commands a premium. Rock-solid TTs, parts are available. You may get some comments to the contrary on this forum because "it's a dj turntable", but that is pure nonsense. But, find one that was not used by a dj (i.e. abused). But even with DJ use, these things can last decades.
