Guys;

For some reason our Alexa ranking is getting worse (the lower the # the better). I am having a hard time understanding this since our traffic is fine. If you can install the Alexa tool bar on your browser and make Audioholics your homepage it may help us. Advertisers use Alexa as one of many metrics to determine website popularity. I appreciate if anyone can do this for us.

You can download the Alexa toolbar here:

How do you figure your traffic is fine? If you look at Quantcast or Compete, they show a steady decline for this year.

Our editorial site traffic is actually up from last year. Our forum traffic is down a bit (registration issues I believe) but not enough to explain the downtrend in those tools. We aren't quantified nor do we have page code in for Compete so that may explain why we have a negative trend there. I honestly don't want to add more code to the site and slow us down just to get better data for those tools that nobody seems to really use.

Google Analytics is the most important. I consider Alexa important as a gauge to compare to other sites but its been very flaky lately. Even Electronichouse and Ecoustics rankings are tanking similar to ours. Seems like the A/V tech industry is taking a hit from them.

Alexa works fine on macs. It's Safari Alexa doesn't like. Chrome or Firefox on Mac work just fine.

How do they come up with their stats, especially the demographics of the audience? Granted, anyone can tell that we're mostly dudes :D, but how do they know age group of visitors?

Q: Where does Alexa get the traffic data?
Alexa gets its traffic data, including reach, page views and rank information, from a global panel of web users. The panel is used as a statistical sample of Internet usage to extrapolate overall traffic patterns and web usage information. The panel consists of Alexa Toolbar users and other sources web usage information.

Q: How reliable is the traffic data?
Alexa calculates traffic information for tens of millions of sites. However, the top 500 sites get almost 50% of all web traffic and compete for an increasingly smaller slice of the web traffic pie. Due to statistical limitations for the remaining millions of sites, we are unable to provide accurate traffic data for sites not within the top 100,000.

That's how I feel about downloading tool bars on my computer.

We're here ... now it's up to the advertisers to figure out a way to reach us with their ads.

The fine companies buying space for the banner ads seem to have it figured out. :)

Okay, I'll admit it...I went to download that tool bar right after Gene posted, but the user agreement stopped me. The idea that, while they don't intentionally do it, they might collect personal information while I surf made me uneasy. As I'm not a web guru, I don't like anything that makes me think that they could be collecting login info and passwords, or whatever.

I think Alexa is becoming more and more irrelevant with people using ad blocker and not wanting to clutter their browsers with 3rd party tool bars.

Luckily we use Google Analytics which is an industry standard tool for reporting traffic metrics. We fully disclose all of our traffic data, but most of our competition doesn't. Some websites actually just make up bogus data and have no way of proving it, but they are good at selling ads nonetheless.

Anyways, I'm not losing sleep over Alexa but it would be nice to see it remain consistent in how it ranks sites.

Gene,

Does Google Analytics have a way for us to view site info like Alexa does? I find the data interesting.

Thanks.

No the only way to see that is if we provide permissions to a user with a Gmail account. We don't give that ability to anyone but advertisers that request it.

I notice this trend a lot, Windows people get furious about IE issues but Safari issues are fine according to the gospel of Jobs...

Come on, ya know I had to jab Apple. :D

100% agree...
Imo If anything is takes Alexa's place is QuantCast - I know and use[d] Google Analytics for my blog, they are truly setting the bar, but quantcast data is open to everyone and can important for some ad agencies..

Based on the historical chart, things seem to be back to normal. There was that uncharacteristic dip earlier this year, but we seem to be past that.
