I am not an expert here, but in my experience you are putting the cart before the horse. I chose my speakers, which tend to be more significant in producing the overall sound of a system, then did my best to match a receiver to them. That is not to say it can't be done the other way around, I think it just makes your job more difficult by narrowing your speaker choices to something less that "all" from the begining.
I think I can put a medocre receiver together with a great pair of speakers, and get some sort of repectable sound if the system is al least tuned. If I put some crappy speakers together with a stellar receiver, the sound will likley just be ... crappy.
