You guys are not thinking "damn rich people" here. :D
Now Fry's has the p153 on sale for $100 per pair. Get those with a BIC sub and take the remainder money and give it to a no-kill dog shelter or some animal rescues. Seriously I hear that when you donate money to an animal rescue it tightens up the bass and unveils the highs. Oh yeah it also helps bring a chocolaty lushness to the mids.

So,

I checked out some speakers today.

I wasn't huge on the B&W Nautilus, I liked the TAD CR1, and the Sonus Faber Stradivari and Guarneri Evolution.

I was not blown away though.

So, I went out to try two more pairs which I found out I really love.

My new favorite Speaker is the Living Voice Vox Olympian (maybe I'll expand my budget for it) and the Nola Baby Grand Reference is a close second.

Please keep the suggestions coming though!

I suggest getting in touch with Selah Audio to do a Constant Beamwidth Transducer using the RAAL tweeter.

when i went to RMAF last year, the ONLY mega-bucks speaker that i heard that i can say honestly wow'ed me was the focal's. i didn't BTW hear a great difference between the top grande utopia and the cheapest floorstander, the viva - just more bass response and a "bigger" soundstage, but sonically very similar. and the others in the room were just as impressed, you could see the amazement on people's faces during the demo.

Diminishing returns. :D

I bet there was a great difference in their aesthetics, build quality, weight, and price. :D

It goes back to the saying that good speakers sound more alike than they sound differently regardless of price and type; the biggest noticeable difference is usually the bass.

If you're really serious about a mega buck speaker, you should check these babies out that I am currently reviewing now:

Status Acoustics Titus 8T Loudspeaker System Q&A Interview — Reviews and News from Audioholics

I have listened to speakers costing even more that don't offer a fraction of their performance. The bass response is unreal and the sound is effortless at any volume level. I'm still waiting to grow a little tired of them before actually writing the review but it hasn't happened yet ;)

Get the Infinity Primus p363 which are on sale at Fry's right now for $100 each!
Seriously guys enough with the P363 recommendation in every speaker thread. They are a good speaker for $400/pr or less but if you think better performance can't be had regardless of price, I suggest you get out and do some listening. I was kind to Infinity in my review b/c of the price, but these speakers are far from perfect and even further from reaching the pinnacle of performance. I don't want to trash the Infinity b/c this speaker is a good value, but let's stop pretending they are something they are NOT.

This reminds me of the fad people had for the Panasonic Class D A/V receiver years back claiming it performed better than a mega priced amp. I got one in for evaluation and boy was it a piece of crap both on the bench and sonically. At least in this case the Infinity speakers are a solid performer and value for the $$$ however...

To the OP, threads like this are pretty useless. Even at the $20K level, every speaker, and I mean every speaker, has an advocate. At the $50K level we're talking hero worship. Subtle differences that mean something to one person, like realistic imaging, mean little to another, and the only way to figure out what you want is to listen for yourself.

You're probably going to need to travel, and I highly recommend it. I did, with 1/5th the budget you're discussing, and it made all the difference. If you believe Gene about that RBH, go to the factory (or Gene's house!) and listen. What's a $1.5K trip when you're dropping $50K+ on something that will only be worth about half that the minute you take possession? For the Legacy Helix, I'd expect a demo by Dudleston himself at the factory. In this price class you think differently than asking for advice in a forum thread.

I second this one. I have the predecessor to these and couldn't be happier. Plus, with these, you will possibly have the chance to be the first or one of the first people to have them since they are just barely in the review stage.

Also, if you do a fly away to hear them, Utah also has one other plant with high end speakers. Wilson Audio. You could check out the best from both places with less than 1.5 hours of driving between them.

I am looking for a new pair of speakers.
My room is around 270 sq feet, acoustically designed by Northward acoustics, I really don't want to use a sub, and my budget is 100k for the pair.

I'd like some suggestions so I could go check them out.
I am not disappointed with my speakers right now (Acapella High Violoncello), I just want a second pair so I can change things up a bit.

Thanks,
I do not recall we ever designed a room with such speakers in.

We don't design audiophile rooms.

Only Recording/Mixing/Mastering studios and Post / AV professional facilities and test labs & rooms.

Sorry, if I'm mistaken, but I really have no recollection of a room with these in or of ever doing an audiophile room. A mastering room with such speakers in I would remember for sure.

Thomas.

For up to $100K I would say:

Marten
Sonus Farber
Focal
Audio Physic
Avalon Acoustics
Wilson Benesch

I had a chance to hear the B&W 802's a while ago. With a budget limit of 100k, i would say go listen, and get a legit amp. At that price range, the difference is so small, you almost have to imagine the difference for 20 extra grand. Never in my life for that price range, have i heard a more detailed and breathtaking speaker. Hell, even 100 grand pairs sometimes didnt even stack up.
