New SVS Subs Ordered

Guys,

Just spent $1,400 on two SVS PB12-NSD subs for a 2300 cu ft. room. Did the deal with Ed (one hell of a guy)... SVS has a stellar reputation, so I bought them without an audition.

Going from a single Klipsch RW-12D to a pair of NSD's... I'm hoping that my ears are good enough to tell a discernible difference. Ed tells me that they'll be like night and day over the Klipsch so I guess we'll see! On that note, now that I've been looking at new subs, I HAVE notice that the Klipsch is real boomy.

My wife and I watched scene 15 (depth charge scene) from U-571 last night with the Klipsch and it did good but definitely had no "wow" factor to it. I'm hoping for that "wow" factor again when I hook the new ones up and tune them appropriately.

I'm excited but nervous too... At least there's a 45 day return "trial period" if I don't like them.

SVS subs blow...

I have a huge room and went with 2 Ultra's but I ended up selling one as a single seems to handle my room just fine. The guys at SVS are top notch to deal with.

Thanks for order! When the subs arrive, give me a ring and we'll walk through placement, set-up/calibration, AVR digital bass management settings, etc., to ensure the subs and the entire system are optimized.

This will be a big upgrade, both in terms of sheer performance, but just as important - accuracy and subtlety. Listen to the quality and texture of the distant (low-SPL) depth charges and other background bass effects, and you'll notice a much more convincing and realistic underpinning to the soundtrack.

2300CF room and you bought 2? ONE is already like 2-3 of those Klipsch subs :)

Thanks guys... I'm confident now that I'll be super happy with these subs. Was a little shaky because I've never really had a "real" sub and didn't know if my ears were refined enough or whatnot to notice a difference. But I read some additional reference material today on subs and have a more thorough picture now. Of course, she picks 4:3 420i over 16:9 1080p also...so...

My wife was like "I don't know why you need so much bass, what we have now is fine", so I had to explain everything to her and she was like "ok". She doesn't get it, but hopefully she will when she hears them in action. And I'll most certainly post back my impressions. Although, I'm still more or less novice level myself I'd say so don't expect measurements and frequency charts and stuff LOL...

Ed, will do! Looks like FedEx has them tracking for Monday...

At first you may feel a tad underwhelmed and feel like you have less bass than before. Cheap subs are known to be one note performers and are usually overcooked and bloated.

Once you get these new subs dialed in, you start to understand what the "low end" is really supposed to be as a blended texture that just adds to the depth and only calls attention to itself when required. I have likely had 10 different subs in my house and the SVS is the only one that ever stayed.

Two of them were cool and it was a little easier to blend everything in with music. Movies would scare the pee out of you. In the end, I couldn't justify the cost of keeping two so I sold one and the single still puts a smile on my face. Now if I were always listening at reference levels, I would want the second one back.

Excellent explanation of what to expect. That's what I'm expecting exactly... To explain it to her, I told here that there was bass where bass wasn't supposed to be. That these would clean things up and make it more transparent unless it was supposed make itself known. Sounds like I'm tracking on what to expect!

Agreed. An articulate sub often sounds like it isn't doing its job, because a sub sort of shouldn't draw attention to itself until it NEEDS to. Compared to that, lesser subs will always be noticeable because they are actually not doing what they are supposed to: blend in. We've all owned or heard those bad subs that sound fun initially, but aren't properly reproducing sound, but until you've heard it done right, it can be easy to think that type of sound is correct.

I'm sitting here listening to Seven Mary Three with this old Klipsch sub and thinking to myself... Man if the new SVS's sound WAY better than my system sounds now, then HOLY SH*T I'm gonna be in love!

Listening to Rush YYZ now, bass sounds a little lazy like slow to react...

You missed my review of the Klipsch a few years back. I will post it below.

Review of Klipsch Sub 12:

"Cute"

Now if you really have a P-312W, you may not be as happy as we have you thinking you're going to be. That being said, I have sold a JL F113 and a Paradigm Servo 15 that couldn't handle my room and the SVS does.

You had me for a second... I was thinking "oh **** what's a P-312W.. do I have one?" then I checked Google and I'm like "umm no, I don't have it" LOL...

Gotcha though... I'm seriously looking forward to this! Looks like all 4 of the subs left OH last night. (my bro ordered 2 also based on my recommendation from researching in here; he's deployed in AFG)

I'm sure once you tune the system you will fall in love with the SVS subs. I am floored with SVS - their products and service - just amazing!! I too ordered two subs, the cylinder PC12-NSD's , came in on 7/5 and I just can't say how impressed I am.

The PC12's replaced an old set of Velodyne HGS12's - not a subtle difference - is it a visceral couch shaking HOLY S#!T difference!

My set up: 2 SVS subs in the front corners, 2 Velodyne DD12's in the rear corners - all the speakers set to 80hz roll off. Just stunning!

Well, FedEx made it as far as 15 miles away and then noted that they would be delivered Monday... That didn't work... I went and got them LOL

I've got one hooked up now listening to the first bit of music as the settings were before just to "see" a difference between the two. No real impression just yet as I've not configured anything yet at all. I can tell it's tighter and cleaner sounding for sure though...

More to follow I'm sure!

Got the second one unpacked and hooked up... Ran audyssey and am now tweaking.... Love the sound, much cleaner/crisper... Music sounds much better already...

First, congrats! I'm glad that you didn't wait all weekend to get them.

Have you tried the depth charge scene, yet? :D

Oh, yeah...and how about some pictures? :p
