Help - right channel in & out

Hi everybody. So I've got an older Onkyo, the one in my sig. Recently, when I turn on music the right channel does not work. It does this regardless of source:
-CD (digital coax)
-Macbook (toslink)
-iPod (analog)

I was doing some more music listening today and after letting a CD play with the right channel missing, about 5 minutes in it just popped back on and started working. I tried toggling the receiver on and off and that had no effect. My cabling is all secured via binding post, so I have a hard time thinking its the connection between receiver and speaker. FWIW the sub also comes on as it should.

My questions are these:
-Any easy fix?
-Other troubleshooting I should do?
-Worth getting this vintage of receiver repaired given what else is available at competetive prices?
-If I do replace it, should I do used, new, refurb? We may talk recommendations for a new one.

Thanks everybody!

Swap the R&L speakers to eliminate the speaker as the issue. If the problem stays on the same side, it is likely a problem with the receiver. If it follows to the other side, the speaker is the problem.

Securing via binding posts/bananas is not a guarantee of connection, so check all your terminations also, but I'd still try swapping right for left first since it an amp channel or speaker issue is more likely than a connection issue based on what you said.

I swapped the left and right speaker wires to opposite speakers. Same issue. Any idea whether this would be sensible to repair on a AVR this elderly?

Seems like a terminal issue on the receiver, how old is the unit if you don't me asking? If its more than 5 years, forget because when it comes servicing, you will get charged roughly 25-30 dollars just to look at it plus labour which usually is 60-70/hr and the part so it depends on how expensive the part is. Also take into account the depriciated value of unit for what its worth now. If you are are going to take into a repair place, if you live in the GTA (Toronto), take it to a place called Apollo Electronics on Steeles and Weston road, they are the only one I know in the GTA that fixes Oknyo receivers (I know this because I use to sell them for a living), speak to Adrian. Let me know what you do, if you decide to go with a new receiver, let me know as well because we sell receivers similar to Onkyo, thats if you looking to try something new, name is David if you got any questions.

Too bad the 60x line don't have preamp outs. If it did, you could just get an amp and use the Onkyo as a pre. If I were you, when you upgrade, I'd look at the 70x line from them, since they have pre-outs.

A multichannel amp would cost more than a new receiver. Plus the x01 series is pretty old and worth upgrading anyway.

Yes, an amp would cost more and it would most likely outlive the next 2 receivers :)

While also necessitating the purchase of more expensive receivers just to ensure you get preouts. ;)

Thanks for the replies everybody. Turns out the Lord is good. I have a buddy at church who fixes electronics and is looking at it. He also has an old Sony receiver of the same vintage (about 10 years old) which he is giving me for free if he can't fix it. I'm sure I'd be much happier with a new/refurb with the latest codecs, but its not in the financial cards right now. On the off chance the Sony stops working too, recommend me a non-Onkyo product in the $2-300 range?

If that receiver has an A/B speaker switch, then that is where you buddy should look first.

Got the Sony STR-DE685 for free from my buddy today, who indicated my Onkyo was toast. Didn't have time to get into what was wrong with it, as it'd be over my head anyway.

EXTREMELY disappointed with the limited features of the Sony. Fixed xover at 120 hz based upon what I'm reading online (I was using a xover of 60 hz with my Onkyo), no on screen GUI, and I'll have to try and make it work with a universal remote since none was included. Also, it has incremental level adjustments (dB up or down) as usual, but has them for Sub and LFE as if they were different channels. No idea whats up with that.

Ugh. I'm off to AC4L to see what I can get into for cheap.

If you go for cheap, you will be back where you started quickly.

So is that like the $500 range if I'm looking at AC4L? Also, just noticed you're from Minnesota TLS Guy, greetings from a fellow Minnesotan! Where is Benedict in reference to the metro?

You are about right. This looks like a good deal and not many left.

I'm on Benedict Lake which is right between Walker MN and Laporte MN. It is part of the Leech Lake chain, with good access to Leech via the Benedict River.

Here is a typical MN lake scenes
taken at our place a couple of weeks ago.

We have had a nice run of lake weather, except for a bad storm a week ago, when we lost 10 trees.

We also have a Quad 4 condo in Eagan, so I get to the metro quite a bit, especially in the winter. There is too much to do in the summer. I'm in England at the moment for one of my nephew's wedding on Saturday.

Looks like a really nice place. Your kids I presume? I'm just down the road from your Winter place in Eagan. I'm just in Burnsville.

Hows this one look? DENON AVR-891 7.1 Channel 105W A/V 1.4 3D-Ready Receiver | Accessories4less

From what I can tell it looks like older technology, but the MSRP is similar to the Marantz you linked so I wondered if I might be getting into something above Denon's low-end, assuming I'm willing to lose the networking features. I just want something that will be a quality investment and will last.
