Hi all. Been awhile since I've posted. Ran into a question in which I have zero expertise.

I just bought a new TV stand which has an integrated mounting system. I bought it used and it came with all of the hardware necessary, however the previous owner had a smaller TV. According to the documentation, the mount that connects to the TV is rated to 80 lbs and accomodates up to 40" sets.

My Panasonic TC-P42S1 plasma is 59 lbs, but is 42". If the holes will line up, am I right in assuming I can use this mount even though the TV is 2" too large?

Thanks everybody, and if there is something I'm not considering, please let me know!

Tentatively I would say yes. The weight is the more important measurement than the size for the most part. Since the difference is only 2" and you're well under the weight limitation I'd say go for it.

Try to get a model and brand and maybe a model number of the mount and post it here just to be sure. Should be fine though as long as the holes line up.

Weight would be the most important factor to me. The manufacturer of the stand/mount has no idea how big or small your 42" set actually is, since there are literally hundreds of possible displays out there over the years.

The display size specification is because the mount extends upwards from the cabinet. The arm height is of a length which is best suited to accomodate displays up to 40" with most standard mounting hole locations.

Because the arm itself doesn't typically move up or down, just the brackets on the arm can move, they have decided upon 40" being 'safe' for recommendation.

It has NOTHING to do with the capability to support a larger display. Heck, if you could find a 60" display with mounting holes low enough to use the bracket, and of the proper weight (most are now), it could work on that mount just fine.

But, I've done some research on these types of mounts and the size is because of the height of the arm, not because it won't support the weight.

So, yes, your display WILL have holes the line up most likely (VESA standard 200x200 or so) and you can definitely mount it if the height gives enough room and you are happy with the final look.

If you do NOT have enough height, you can add some wood blocking and bolt it to the mount and add a second lightweight low-profile mount to get it where you need it to go.

One small thing though. I bought a mount and it says for up to 65", but my Samsung 55" has inserts that are larger than the upper holes in the mount :( So I drilled the mounts out to accommodate :D

I also bought a separate stand just for my display and it came with a mounting system as well. I tossed that and attached my wall mount to it because it is more beefy. Worked just fine.

So I checked last night and the holes dont line up. Recommendations on a mount for my display on the cheap?

I would go to monoprice.com and check out their mounts. You can even call them or live chat with them and they'll help you find a mount that will fill your needs for the lowest price.

You need to be way more specific, and if possible, post a photo. Did you readjust the mount at all? Does it have adjustments?

Keep in mind, most mounts are the same: There are two brackets that mount on your display directly, then they hook onto the mount itself.

If you are missing the two brackets, then that may be a big issue. You really will want to check the manufacturer to see if there are any critical missing parts before you buy something else.

Otherwise, cheap mounts can be found at HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

I took another look at the mount. In tiny letters on the back I managed to find the manufacturer and model #. Its a Sanus VM 200. It has what appears to be two bars that are supposed to attach vertically to the TV, with graduated holes to accomodate different size displays. These are not long enough to reach my Panny's holes. I'll have a look at monoprice to see what else I can find. Is this Sanus mount worth anything if I resell it locally?

Post a picture? Your 42 possibly has different mounting than a 40" and lower, though usually the range is something like 32"-46" in that size range.

The VM200 has a very small bracket it seems...

Weird the PDF is from the Hitachi website.

Anyway, if your TV pole that the Sanus mount is on can handle any standard mount, or you can drill it out (you are allowed to do this at your own risk!) then you can pick up a cheap universal mount at Monoprice.

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

This is one of my favorites from them:
For only $13.78 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Ultra-Slim Adjustable Tilting Wall Mount Bracket for LCD LED Plasma (Max 165Lbs, 37~63inch**) - BLACK | LCD Plasma Brackets - Tilting Type

It appears from the Panasonic factory mount...

That the mounting pattern on the TV is a VESA 400x400 pattern which most Monoprice mounts for that size TV will handle just fine. The specs on Monoprice typically list the minimum and maximum mounting hole sizes.
