You connect the sub to the receiver using the sub cable. Nothing else connects to the sub.

The bookshelf speakers connect to the receiver's Left and Right main speaker terminals.

I did that and got the right and left to work but the sub still isn't working. I plugged the sub into the sub out and the mono (R) on the back of the sub.

EDIT:

I figured it out it was the gain and crossover settings on the back of the Sub. Can you explain what these do though?

Set the gain on sub at about 12 o clock or half way, set the crossover on the sub to it's highest setting, in the receiver set the Xover for your speakers at about 100Hz to crossover to the sub, all signals below the 100Hz will be directed to the sub, you can experiment with the Xover in the reciever, you may want to raise that 100 Hz until you get sufficent sound from the sub, you can also raise the volume on the back of sub higher beyond the half way mark. In your receiver go into the speaker setup menu and the Xover settings can be managed there, set your speakers to small and the Xover of the mains to 100Hz, select sub yes, all the bass management shoud be done in the receiver, you will be bypassing the sub's crossover and using the receiver's settings. There are test tones in the receiver to calibrate output levels for your mains and sub, you want to match the levels (dB) for each speaker, without a SPL meter it is more difficult to match the speakers levels with the test tones, idealy the speakers should have 75 dB output and the sub a little higher (hot). Do the level matches by ear and set the mains to equal (dB) at about 4.0 for the mains, you can also do this with the sub. Take a listen and adjust the levels and Xover accordingly and subwoofer output level in the receiver. I hope some of this makes sense and helps.
