7.1 Speakers

Good afternoon!

I'm so thankful I've found this forum! I've been looking through it, and I can't find an answer to my specific question.

I have a Yamaha RX-V665 reciever, I have a Bose VCS 10 center, Bose 201 Front left and right, and four Bose 161 speakers for surround. However, my room isn't large enough to put the rear surround speakers behind me at 5.5 feet, as my couch sits directly against that particular rear wall. I have considered placing them directy on the ceiling, facing down at the listening area, but I'm not sure that would work. It's a basement, so I have 10 foot ceilings.

Has anyone ever placed the surround speakers to their sides, and then the rear surround above the listening area, on the ceiling, facing down? Or is that a pipe dream of a solution?

I would stick with 5.1 and call it a day - save the extra speakers
for something else. You may benefit with 7.1 in a larger room.

I agree. 7.1 not really useful (accept maybe a very large room). Also, true 7.1 mixes are few and far between.

I have my couch against the wall too. This is my set-up. The towers are designed to be rear surrounds (build in mirror image which I use for surrounds) and the rear surrounds I have wall mounted. Works good for me. I am happy with this set-up.

5.1 mate much eseyer to space out the speakers I'm running 7.1 and regret it verey much so

So I should stick with 5.1, I could possibly use them somewhere else, thank you all for your input. I'm off to read the FAQ on tuning a sub...

Stick with the 5.1 setup. I also had a 7.2 setup at one time, but moved to a smaller location and was forced to a 5.1. You won't miss a thing by doing so, and use the extra two speakers for a second zone.

I agree, I only run a 7.1 cause I had another 2 small speakers after I upgraded

I'm in the process of setting up my 7.1 and mounting the rear surround speakers on the ceiling above my couch facing towards the listeners. Ill let you know how it goes for me.

I went from 5.1 to 6.1 and in my small listening space, I've yet to hear a difference.

3db Can you post pics of the rear speaker placement in your place? I'm in the same situation too. I want to upgrade 5.1 to either 6.1 or 7.1 in a small space. I went recently from 3.5 to 5.1 and love it.
